The CW has halted production on many of its major series
In light of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, many films and television series have halted production — and that includes quite a few shows on The CW.
When it comes to Cable television series, The CW is home to a number of fan favorites, many of them under the Arrowverse umbrella. And the network has joined many others in halting production on those series for the time being, a response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that’s been doing a number on just about every industry, including entertainment.
One of the first announcements regarding production delays came from Riverdale, The CW’s quirky teen drama set in the Archie Comics universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show stopped production after one of its team members had contact with someone testing positive for the disease. (This team member is currently undergoing the appropriate testing and preventitive treatment, the outlet reports.) Riverdale was filming in Vancouver before the outbreak was declared a pandemic, and there’s no word on when the cast and crew will resume filming as of yet.
The CW’s DC series have also delayed production for the time being. According to Deadline, The Flash, which, like Riverdale, was filming in Vancouver, suspended operations “until further notice.” It’s currently unclear how this suspension will affect the show’s currently airing sixth season, but it’s probably safe to assume the next few episodes have already been filmed. Production on Batwoman and Supergirl has also been shut down, and given that neither of them has finished filming their current seasons, it’s possible air dates will also be pushed back for these series.
With so many of its shows currently in limbo right now, Warner Brothers Television Group released a statement regarding all of the production changes. According to Deadline, it reads as follows:
"“With the rapidly changing events related to COVID-19, and out of an abundance of caution, Warner Bros. Television Group is halting production on some of our 70+ series and pilots currently filming or about to begin… There have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on any of our productions, but the health and safety of our employees, casts and crews remains our top priority. During this time, we will continue to follow the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control as well as local officials and public health professionals in each city where our productions are based.”"
It’s a relief to hear that no cast or crew members have been diagnosed with COVID-19, and with any luck, the measures being taken by Warner Brothers Television Group will keep it that way. We’ll be waiting for further updates on production schedules.
