Now that the Guardians of the Galaxy are definitely making an appearance in Thor 4, we’re looking at how they might factor into the film’s plot.

Anyone hoping to see the former king of Asgard team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy once more was in for a treat earlier this week. Vin Diesel spilled the beans in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, stating that “… Thor 4 will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy.” Given that this wasn’t confirmed prior to Vin Diesel’s claim, he also added that “maybe he shouldn’t have said anything.” Oops. Too late there.

The addition of the Guardians to Thor: Love and a Thunder does make a lot of sense though. For one, the chemistry that Thor had with the group during Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame was stellar — certainly enough so to warrant a joint film. Thor also hitches a ride with the gang after leaving Asgard in Valkyrie’s hands at the end of Endgame. So, if Thor 4 takes place afterward, it’s not totally unexpected that Thor would be with them.

Unfortunately, Vin Diesel didn’t go overboard with the details, so we don’t know which Guardians will show up during the film — or how big of a role they’ll play. Of course, given that the next Thor movie focuses on Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster becoming the Mighty Thor, it’s unclear how large of a role Chris Hemsworth’s Thor will even have. It’s possible he’ll be on the sidelines with the Guardians, but it’s equally as likely they’ll all play some sort of incremental role in saving the galaxy — again.

Given that Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters before Guardians of the Galaxy 3, there’s also a chance that the events of the former will impact the plot of the latter. Directors Taika Waititi and James Gunn haven’t been forthcoming with plot details, but if the future Phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are to connect as the previous ones have, intermingling the movies’ storylines early on is a smart move.

Thor: Love and Thunder is currently set to release on November 5, 2021, while the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie is expected sometime in 2022.
