Hilary Duff has publicly asked Disney to move its Lizzie McGuire reboot from Disney+ to Hulu — and honestly, we’re all about that.

The news back in January that Disney+’s Lizzie McGuire reboot was being put on hold after showrunner Terri Minsky exited over creative differences caused many to believe the revival might not happen at all. It seemed an odd move even at the time, as Minsky served as showrunner for the original series, and she seemed passionate about bringing Lizzie’s adulthood to life in the upcoming reboot.

But fans are beginning to get a clearer idea of just what “creative differences” caused the rift, particularly after the streaming platform moved the Love, Simon spin-off to Hulu for having “mature content.” How a series about an LGBTQ+ teenager going through the motions of high school is less appropriate for young audiences than The Mandalorian‘s bounty hunting and killing is unclear, but that’s a question for a different article.

With the Lizzie McGuire reboot on hiatus though, star Hilary Duff has remained pretty silent — at least until the past week or so. After Love, Victor was shifted to Hulu, Duff commented that the situation “sounds familiar,” a remark many believed was aimed at Disney+’s issues with the new Lizzie McGuire series. And that seems to be confirmed in a recent Instagram post the actress made, expressing a desire to move her own series to Hulu as well.

Duff took to Instagram a few days ago, pushing Disney to move the series to Hulu. In the post, she wrote, “Was incredibly excited to launch “Lizzie” on D+ and my passion remains! However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with LIZZIE, who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”

Duff’s argument makes sense, especially given that the original audience for Lizzie McGuire is now well into young adulthood. A series about a 30-year-old woman aimed at viewers around that age shouldn’t be confined to a PG rating at all. And if moving the show to Hulu will allow Duff and the creatives working on the series to explore more relevant storylines, it’s a move Disney should make. (There’s also a point to be made for Disney adding a young-adult category to its own streaming service, but again, a topic for another article….)

Disney hasn’t responded to Duff’s plea or made any new announcements about the Lizzie McGuire reboot, but it seems the actress’ suggestion is one that could be moved forward with — particularly if audiences and the show’s creatives are behind it. We’ll be waiting to hear more about the show, but fingers crossed Disney doesn’t decide to do away with it altogether — or keep poor Lizzie confined to the problems of a middle-school student forever.
