During last week’s Grey’s Anatomy, Carina warned Meredith about DeLuca. Now she might not be able to stop him from putting his own life in danger.

Last week on Grey’s Anatomy we watched Carina and Meredith discuss Andrew DeLuca‘s abnormal behavior. We watched him become agitated when Bailey confronted him about it — after Meredith confronted her first.

And then we held our breath as DeLuca screamed at Meredith in the middle of a patient floor, in front of numerous co-workers, before breaking up with her and storming off.

“You sound just like your father” may have been an all-too-true statement. But it certainly wasn’t enough to snap DeLuca back to reality.

Now it seems as though only the consequences of a life-threatening choice are going to lead to some kind of resolution — though what that might end up looking like, we’re almost afraid to find out.

While it may seem like DeLuca’s mental health issues came out of nowhere, this storyline has been building up to a boiling point for a long time. Ever since Andrew and Carina’s father came to Seattle, we’ve known there was a possibility his son could experience similar symptoms.

The writers have done a good job subtly giving us signals that his behavior has become more and more irrational as seasons have progressed. At first, we all thought he was acting immaturely and being insufferable — completely falling apart over one heartbreak. Dating his boss. Going to jail to cover for the crimes of his girlfriend.

Now we’re going to see him walk out into a blizzard for no other reason than the manic desire to be seen as a hero. Even if he does come back unharmed, it might be up to Meredith to — as his superior — demand he gets help if he wants to keep his job.

No one wants to be in that position. But it’s what he might need to realize things have gotten further out of control than he ever intended.

As someone who has never been a huge fan of Andrew DeLuca, I’m glad they’re going in this direction with this story. Highlighting the realities of mental health issues in the workplace, combined with the equally real pressures younger doctors face in their field, is a good move.

Some might argue it’s also good for MerLuca’s future, since she might be able to forgive him and take him back once he’s in a healthier place. Not on board with taking things that far, personally, but to each their own.

Fingers crossed no one we’ve grown helplessly attached to freezes to death in this blizzard! Now that I’ve spoken it into probability, it’s definitely going to happen now. Maybe this is the episode Alex returns to Seattle, and won’t make it through the week alive.

You’re welcome.
