Hiatus who? A new Star Wars movie might be on the horizon

Despite recent claims that Star Wars movies would be taking a hiatus, there are now reports that a new movie might be in the works.

Despite the recent claim that Star Wars movies would be taking a hiatus following the release of The Rise of Skywalker, there are already reports of a new movie being in the works — and the conclusion to the Skywalker Saga hasn’t even come out on Blu-ray yet!

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news yesterday, reporting that a new Star Wars project is in development from J.D. Dillard and Matt Owens. Deadline added that the film will be set on Exegol, the Sith planet fans got a glimpse of during The Rise of Skywalker. No plot details have been revealed outside of that, and another thing is unclear as well: whether or not the project is being worked on for theatrical release or for Disney+.

Given Disney’s previous desire to take a break from the movies — as well as The Mandalorian‘s successful first season — it seems likely whatever project is underway will be for Disney+. Several long-form Star Wars series are already in the works for the streaming platform, including an Obi-Wan Kenobi one and a Rogue One prequel following Cassian Andor. If the franchise is putting its focus on Disney+ for the time being, a straight-to-streaming movie might make sense (and it wouldn’t necessarily negate the whole hiatus thing — perhaps Lucasfilm and Disney are simply taking a break from theatrical features).

As for what the new movie might cover, there are loads of possibilities. With the Skywalker Saga concluded, it’s unlikely we’ll see any of the original characters return. But knowing Exegol’s history, perhaps we’ll get some sort of Sith or villain origin story that ties into the events we’ve witnessed so far. We’ve never truly had a villain as a main character for a Star Wars project, so this could be an interesting spin on things.
