A Friends reunion is happening after all, so we’ll ask: How you doin’?
It’s official: The original cast of the popular ‘90s sitcom, Friends, is reuniting for a special on HBO Max.
It seems everything is getting some sort of reboot these days, so it’s not much of a surprise that longtime rumors of the popular ‘90s sitcom, Friends, coming back for seconds actually turned out to be true. It was made official yesterday, when it was revealed that WarnerMedia’s streaming service, HBO Max, would be bringing the original cast of Friends together again for an unscripted reunion special. The details are sparse for now, but it seems the special will be ready to stream once HBO Max launches in May — meaning dedicated fans can watch it alongside the entirety of the series, which will also be available on the platform from day one.
While this doesn’t appear to be any long-form revival of the series, it will be nice to see the crew back together after all these years. The cast is nearly as excited as the fans, as they were the ones who announced the big news on their social-media accounts yesterday. Several of them posted an image of the gang with the caption “It’s happening…” — and let’s be honest, fans were waiting for this moment, so it didn’t take long to unravel the meaning behind this.
The Late Show With James Corden‘s Ben Winston is set to direct the special, with the six main cast members executive producing alongside the series’ original team of executive producers: Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman, and David Crane. Given how invested everyone involved has been in the series, it’s probably safe to say the special is in good hands.
Truthfully, if there was a surefire way for HBO Max to snag more subscribers, this was it. Having the entire catalog of Friends episodes at their fingertips was already incentive for most fans to opt in for this streaming service over its competitors, but offering them new Friends content could just place WarnerMedia’s platform on the same level as streaming giants Netflix and Disney+.
Are you planning to watch the Friends reunion when it arrives on HBO Max? Why or why not?
