The second season of You has a crazy twist near its end that suggests we’ll be seeing a third season. Showrunner Sera Gamble discusses the show’s future.

Warning: This post contains spoilers for the second season of Netflix’s You.

The second season of Netflix’s original series, You, hit the streaming platform this past weekend, and it delivered new episodes that explored Joe’s psyche in further depth. The new season also offered an unexpected twist that made a third season a strong probability. After all, Joe still hasn’t been caught and punished for his crimes — and there’s a new killer in town, one he’ll supposedly be starting a life with in the show’s third season.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Sera Gamble discussed what inspired the big twist surrounding Joe’s new love interest, as well as where she sees the series going from here. As Love’s character reacts slightly differently to Joe’s admission about what he’s done in the book season 2 is based off of, Gamble explained why the show’s creative teamed pushed the character even further, turning her into a killer as well.

“We knew we needed to have some kind of big revelation about that character that would snap into focus everything that you’ve learned about her all season,” Gamble explained, “and that would particularly hinge on Joe’s blind spots toward women he loves or is obsessed with.”

Gamble also emphasized the fact that Love represents everything Joe can’t accept about himself — and his “blindspot” clearly seems to stem from his desire to see her as innocent and needing protection. This is why her actions toward the end of the season come as such a shock to him. He’s disgusted by who Love actually is as much as he’s disgusted by himself.

“In the book, Love finds out who Joe really is and surprisingly she is not totally repulsed,” she continued. “So that exists in the character. We just started from that place and the conversation was about how there’s the person that Joe would think is his perfect woman, and then there’s somebody who actually would be compatible with Joe.”

The season leaves off with Joe and Love living a white-picket-fence life in the suburbs, with a baby on the way. Of course, the final moments show that Joe isn’t going to change his ways so easily. And with Love in the picture, things are only bound to get messier. It sets the series up for an interesting third season, and Gamble confirmed that she’d love to continue on this path beyond season 2.

“Our fingers are crossed that we get to keep telling the story,” she said. “We don’t have any kind of official pickup or anything. I will say that when we originally sold the show, we very broadly described it as each season would be a new love obsession and a new world.”

“I can’t say that we know exactly what a season three would be, but I can say things won’t go well for Joe,” Gamble added. And if he’s planning on being unfaithful to Love, we’d have to agree.

And it’s not just a feud with Love during season 3 that Joe might be facing. Gamble suggested that the series could go on for a few more seasons if given the chance. It’s hard to see how long they could believably keep Joe’s story going, but we suppose that will depend on what happens if we actually get a season 3.

“I never like to jinx things by being too specific one way or the other,” she said. “I will say that we have a lot of stories still to tell. I am not scared at all of saying that we definitely could follow Joe for several more seasons. That being said, it’s a tough TV landscape right now. There’s about 10 billion TV shows and orders are shorter and there’s more competition, so we never really save anything for later seasons.”

It’s good to know that we’ll never be left hanging, but we hope that Gamble and her creative team find interesting new ways to keep refreshing this story. After all, it’s not like many characters introduced are usually left at the end of a given season. With so many repetitive storylines, we hope You can keep going without getting tiresome. But at least Gamble seems to have lots of new ideas.
