Baby Yoda does have a name, but you’ll have to keep saying Baby Yoda for now

Baby Yoda has taken the world by storm since The Mandalorian dropped, but fans still don’t know what The Child is actually called. According to Bob Iger, the little guy (girl?) does have a name — but Disney isn’t sharing just yet.

The first season of The Mandalorian ended with Mando taking Baby Yoda into his care until he can find the child’s ancestors — or until The Child finally comes of age. (Given his extended lifespan, who knows when that would be…) And much about Baby Yoda remains a mystery, though it seems that season 2 will begin to unravel The Child’s background — and his or her place in the Star Wars universe.

Given that Baby Yoda doesn’t talk, fans don’t know much about the small Force user and its species. Viewers barely know what gender to refer to The Child as, or what to even call him or her beyond just “Baby Yoda.” Many Star Wars fans have pointed out that the kid is not, in fact, a younger version of Yoda, but it’s the best fans can do — at least until we get more information.

And according to SYFY WIRE, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that he knows what Baby Yoda is actually called, though he isn’t sharing with the class just yet. In an interview on The Star Wars Show, Iger explained that Jon Favreau is constantly reminding him to call the character by its correct name — though Iger too seems to be falling into the Baby Yoda trap the fandom has created.

“I know its real name and it’s one of the reasons why I have extra security now, because I don’t wanna be given some kind of truth serum by someone,” Iger said. “We don’t refer to The Child the way the world is referring to [the character], which is ‘Baby Yoda.’ That’s a no-no. It’s not [Yoda]. I got chastised in my early emails to Jon Favreau for [calling him that]. It just seemed easy. I got my wrist slapped by Jon a few times [who said,] ‘It’s not Baby Yoda!’”

If Favreau is so concerned with The Child being referred to correctly, it’s a bit strange that the first season of the show gave us no name to call Baby Yoda by. Of course, it did take a full season for the series to reveal Mando’s true name. And it looks like we’ll be waiting until fall 2020 to discover Baby Yoda’s.

Until then, you know what name we’ll be using.
