The fifth Cormoran Strike novel is now likely complete. Here’s what we know so far and when we can likely expect it to be released.

If you’re a fan of the Cormoran Strike novels, there’s some great news. J.K. Rowling recently shared that she was close to finishing the writing of the novel, which means she’s likely finished now.

The news was certainly surprising. Back in May 2018, Rowling shared that she was working on Fantastic Beasts 3 and then had plans to work on a non-Harry Potter children’s books. It was only in November 2018 that we learned she was also working on the fifth Cormoran Strike novels, but it didn’t sound like the novel would be high priority.

More from Harry Potter

It looks like we were wrong. In a speech during the Hope Award Gala in New York City, the Harry Potter author shared that she was on the final pages. In fact, she would have finished by the time she got to the awards had she not jumped on a plane to accept the award. So, we can comfortably assume that Rowling has finished writing the novel.

There isn’t a name for it just yet. Nor is there a release date. However, if the writing is finished now, it’s highly likely that we’ll see a 2020 publication date. This will depend on editing and the publishers.

The Cormoran Strike novels, done under the pen name Robert Galbraith, were originally released one book per year. However, the fourth book took three years from the third, which suggests Rowling has a lot more on her plate or she’s finally comfortable not releasing new books each year. Hey, at least we’re not waiting as long as Outlander fans have waited for the ninth book in that series or how long Game of Thrones fans have waited for the sixth book in that series!

Either way, at least we know the writing is done. Now it’s over to the publishers.
