Who would Fantastic Beasts fans like to see replace Johnny Depp?

Whether you want to see Johnny Depp replaced in Fantastic Beasts or not, there’s one actor’s name that keeps coming up if the switch should happen.
When it comes to actors surrounded by controversy, there is one who has slinked mostly into the background to deal with it. Johnny Depp is that man, although he is still part of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. And it’s this role that some fans would like to see him fired from. There’s one particular actor many would like to see take on the role.
This isn’t a post to debate the controversy or whether Johnny Depp should even be replaced. There’s a lot we don’t know about events going on behind the scenes, and right now, it’s unlikely that Depp will be replaced unless something is confirmed legally. That doesn’t stop fans from discussing replacement options.

According to Cheat Sheet, Benedict Cumberbatch is the man on the list. The English actor is best known for roles in Sherlock, Patrick Melrose, and the HBO movie Brexit. He’s also done a number of big blockbuster movies, including Atonement and 12 Years a Slave.
He certainly has the skill. Cumberbatch has done good and bad guys. He’s done flawed men who you want to like but simply can’t. He’s also done outright ruthless men who have no redeeming qualities, leading to you forgetting that it was even Cumberbatch in the first place. (Atonement, we’re looking at you!) So, the idea of playing Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts isn’t all that impossible.

The benefit of Cumberbatch is that it remains a big name attached to the franchise. It’s not that Fantastic Beasts needs a big name anymore, but it certainly helps when it comes with controversy of replacing another actor. The person replacing Johnny Depp if that should ever happen would need to be someone known, liked, and respected.
