Camila Morrone has been cast as Camila in Daisy Jones & the Six, joining Riley Keough in Amazon’s adaptation of the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

This train is moving fast! It was just a few days ago that we got word Amazon Studios had found their Daisy Jones in Riley Keough. Now they’ve found their Camila in Camila Morrone.

According to Deadline, Camila will be the “girlfriend of lead singer Billy Dunne and the band’s center of gravity. She follows the love of her life in his pursuit of rock stardom only to discover her own potential along the way.”

That’s a major departure from Taylor Jenkins Reid‘s novel that I’m here for on so many levels. Camila’s role in Daisy Jones & the Six was that of a pillar of strength. She wasn’t unflappable, but she pushed through her fears and insecurities to fight and hold onto the life she believed she deserved.

Even when Billy’s addiction threatened to steal the family they dreamed of having together — even when his messy and often emotionally volatile relationship with Daisy tested their marriage — she did not let go. She was a character to admire, but she was also relegated to the role of muse.

Billy wrote song after song for Camila, including “Señora”, “Honeycomb,” and “Aurora.” He wrote so many that Daisy refused to sing what she called his apology songs for not measuring up to the man he believes Camila deserves.

But we never really got to learn what Camila was up to while the band recorded an album and toured. Yes, she was raising her daughters with Billy but what else? The great thing about an adaptation is the ability to expand the world, in this case expanding Camila’s world beyond Billy.

In the book, Daisy says, “I had absolutely no interest in being somebody else’s muse. I am not a muse. I am the somebody.” Maybe in Amazon’s adaptation, Camila will get to be more than a muse, too. Maybe she’ll get to be her own somebody.

All I know is, the rocker and the muse were cast first, which makes me wonder if they’re going to expand on Daisy and Camila’s awareness of each other. It’s one of the most interesting dynamics in the novel. Camila didn’t just save Billy; she saved Daisy, too. They might not have had a friendship, but Daisy loved her. Seeing that love play out onscreen would be a wonderful addition to a story already steeped in the different ways love can manifest.
