Abbi Jacobson and D’Arcy Carden are set to star in the Amazon adaptation of A League of Their Own, which Jacobson will also write and executive produce.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place) and Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) are set to star in Amazon’s remake of the 1992 film A League of Their Own. Jacobson is also writing and serving as one of the show’s executive producers.

The Hollywood Reporter also shared the series’ logline:

"“A League of Their Own is a half-hour comedy infusing the warmth, humor and DNA of the classic film, while taking a contemporary spin on the stories of the women surrounding the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The show will begin with the formation of the league in 1943 and follows the Rockford Peaches season to season as they struggle to keep the team alive through close games, injuries, late night bar crawls, sexual awakenings, not crying and road trips across a rapidly changing United States…”"

The phrase “contemporary spin” seems particularly intriguing, as it may mean any number of things. While the original film dealt with the sexism hurled at the first-ever female baseball league, there are plenty more issues to be mined in a series based in 1943. A deeper look at racism and homophobia is something the length of a series will allow for further exploration of.

Penny Marshall directed the original film, which starred Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and Rosie O’Donnell. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jacobson received Marshall and Davis’s blessing with the new series.

The series will mark Jacobson’s first major series to write and produce since Broad City ended in March of this year. Meanwhile, Carden, known primarily for her role as Janet on The Good Place and Natalie Greer on Barry, will have her first starring television role with the Amazon series. Pairing these two amazing comedians and actors is surely a home run for the reboot.
