Recent reports have indicated that Marvel is getting back to basics with the next installment of the Avengers franchise.

Spoiler warning: This article contains potential spoilers for all Marvel films through Avengers: Endgame.

Following this summer’s announced lineup for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans were left wondering when the next Avengers movie would be happening among the long list of new franchises and characters set to be introduced in the next couple of years. It appears as though we now have an answer to that question. Sources claim that the next chapter in the Avengers franchise will be released no later than 2023, however audiences should expect a shake-up in the Avengers’ status quo this time around.

Historically speaking, each phase of the MCU featured at least one grand Avengers movie, the latest of course being the tear-filled Avengers: Endgame. While we knew it was inevitable that Earth’s mightiest heroes would be back, sources claim that Avengers 5 will have a new team who is expected to go up against a much smaller-scaled villain than one of galactic proportions.

The new team is rumored to be a mix of old and new faces, bridging the gap between the first iteration of the team and the next generation of heroes. Returning characters are said to include Falcon/Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and Jane Foster’s Thor (Natalie Portman). Reports indicated that this movie would be more comparable in scope to the original The Avengers or Avengers: Age of Ultron. With recent reports of new franchises and characters being added such as Black Knight, She-Hulk, and Ms. Marvel, it is unclear yet if any of these new characters will be featured in the film.

Fans of the Marvel Netflix shows are hoping for returns to the MCU via the big screen for at least Daredevil and Jessica Jones, both of whom had three successful seasons of their series along with both characters having strong ties to the greater MCU. It was also recently announced that Ant-Man and the Wasp 2 will be moving forward with Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily and director Peyton Reed. The next film to be released in the Marvel lineup is Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, which is set to open on May 1st, 2020. The solo movie will be followed up by The Eternals, focusing on a new race of super-beings played by Angelina Jolie, Jemma Chan and Kit Harrington.
