The Good Place: Bad Janet and the endless possibilities
The Good Place continues through its final season giving us thought-provoking questions. This latest involves Bad Janet’s return to the Bad Place
Look, we can keep discussing The Good Place and its final season and what the actual experiment is because it’s obviously not actually about our four new test subjects.
But there’s only so many times we can repeat ourselves, so instead, let’s focus on Bad Janet. This week’s episode framed itself as Michael telling the story to Bad Janet before releasing her back to the Bad Place rather than marble-izing her.
He claims it’s all about being a better person today than you were yesterday. And he lets her go back to the Bad Place with his and Janet’s manifesto from their experiments.
The question(s) on everyone’s lips is: Will Bad Janet show up again this season to help our team? And did Michael convince her?
Because if you watch all of their scenes together in this episode, Bad Janet does actually listen and engage with the story. Most of it is her half-ashed comments to get under Michael’s reformed demon skin; yes, but she’s been rebooted just as many times as our Janet, so she’s the smartest, most enhanced Bad Janet out there.
And she actually understood Michael’s simile/metaphor at one point. There’s something more going on in that Bad Janet brain of hers.
She may have sarcastically said that every person who gets a book as a gift reads it, but there was a look in her eyes that showed just a hint of hesitation. As if she may just crack it open to see what the fuss is about.
Already this season we’ve seen all our characters improve on their past selves, even if they slip up now and then. Even demon Glenn came around to understand that maybe what the Bad Place is doing is more complicated than the past.
Still, there’s always the possibility that Bad Janet will use all of this knowledge against them. Because that’s also what the Bad Place does.
One thing is for sure: The Good Place will keep us guessing until the credits roll on the series finale.
