Judging by the episode title and preview footage, this week’s episode of Batwoman will focus on Alice’s backstory — and it’s going to be a harrowing one.

Batwoman has spent the majority of its first season thus far building up Kate Kane’s character. We’ve seen her struggle with and begin to accept her role as Batwoman, and while there may not be any true character growth to boast of just yet, we understand her motivations and morals. What we don’t understand is what’s driving Alice’s quest for vengeance against her family and Gotham — although it looks like tonight’s episode might shed some light on that front.

With an episode title like “Mine Is a Long and a Sad Tale,” we’re bound to get an emotional backstory. And the promo trailer for the upcoming episode showcases plenty of flashbacks to Alice’s childhood — as well as what appears to be a pretty harrowing confrontation between Kate and Alice.

Watch the promo trailer for tonight’s episode of Batwoman here:

The fact that Alice is behind bars clearly isn’t going to prevent her from causing Kate and Jacob pain, and that’s exactly what she wants to do after they gave up on finding her. Alice is angry about whatever happened after the car accident that led to her disappearance, but fans have yet to get any specific details about where she was all those years — or how her experiences transformed her into a super villain. With her backstory on the way, though, it seems like viewers are in for a rollercoaster of emotions. And Kate and Jacob are likely going to be on the same ride.

What’s most exciting about the coming episode is that, once the series explores Alice’s history, it can finally dive into the meat of the first season’s plot. Batwoman has done a great job of fleshing out the relationships at the center of the show. But with everything on the table this week, Kate, Alice, and Jacob are going to have to make difficult choices — and probably decide if past trauma is enough to justify foregoing your own morals.
