Star Wars pre-sales ticket numbers top Avengers: Endgame in first hour

The number of pre-sales tickets sold for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker surpassed that of Avengers: Endgame after just one hour.

It’s been an exciting week for Star Wars fans, with the final trailer for The Rise of Skywalker arriving on Monday and pre-sales tickets becoming available the same night. And the pre-sale for Episode IX surprised fans on multiple levels. For one, to the delight of many, tickets became available a few hours earlier than anticipated. But the film also set a new record for the number of pre-sales tickets sold within the first hour on Atom Tickets — one that even managed to surpass the record set by Avengers: Endgame earlier this year.

Marvel fans will recall that the ticket pre-sale for Avengers: Endgame caused ticket websites to crash, simultaneously setting a new record for ticket sales made within the first hour. But according to Atom Tickets, pre-sales for the upcoming Star Wars film outsold Endgame by 45 percent.

Of course, buyers didn’t appear to have nearly as many problems actually getting onto the sites to purchase tickets, so that could factor in — but the new record still says plenty about the anticipation surrounding the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga.

Could the upcoming Star Wars film defeat Endgame at the box office as well? It certainly seems possible. After all, The Rise of Skywalker doesn’t just conclude the current trilogy of films; it brings together all of the movies since A New Hope. And that’s enough to pique the interest of even the most cynical fan in the galaxy (especially after getting so much of Emperor Palpatine in the new trailer).

Of course, The Rise of Skywalker‘s pre-sales numbers aren’t totally unexpected. According to Comicbook.com, Atom Tickets cites The Last Jedi and Rogue One among its top five films with the highest first-hour sales, both only outdone by Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It seems Star Wars and Marvel have been in competition for best pre-sales number for some time.

The Rise of Skywalker doesn’t hit theaters for another two months, so there’s still plenty of time to purchase tickets — though we wouldn’t wait too long if you’re looking to see it anywhere near opening weekend. With trailers like the one that just dropped, there are so many questions that need to be answered — and fans are going to be rushing to theaters to see how things wrap up.
