If you’ve been not-so-patiently awaiting The Mandalorian, it’s time to get even more excited. The first reviews are in, and critics appear to be loving the series.

There’s no worse feeling than when a movie or television series is incredibly hyped prior to its release date, only to let fans down once it actually hits the screen. But it appears that those anticipating The Mandalorian don’t need to worry: The first reviews of the series have arrived, and they’re overwhelmingly positive.

The series, which is set in the criminal underbelly of the Star Wars universe five years after the Empire falls in Return of the Jedi, comes out on November 12 — meaning fans don’t have long to form their own opinions about the show. But a few fortunate critics were able to see footage from the show’s early episodes during a Disney+ press event, and they had plenty of praise to share.

Collider’s Steven Weintraub took to Twitter to write: “This is the Star Wars thing I’ve been waiting for! While I love the Skywalker Saga, I’ve wanted to see new characters and places explored in depth which can only be done over multiple episodes in a series format. Cannot wait to see more of @themandalorian.”

And it certainly is exciting that we’re finally getting a long-form story set in the Star Wars universe. Given that the majority of the characters from the series appear to fall under the morally grey category, it’ll be nice to actually get to know them in depth — especially if we’re supposed to like them in spite of their flaws.

Screen Rant‘s Mansoor Mithaiwala echoed Weintraub’s sentiment, saying that the show “introduces new concepts, and adds layers that people have been waiting to see for a long time.” And while that’s good news for Star Wars fans looking for something new, Mithaiwala also emphasized that the series does still have the same feel as the movies.

And even Scott Wampler of BirthMoviesDeath.com, who isn’t “the biggest Star Wars guy” was impressed by the footage — meaning that even those who just aren’t that into the Skywalker Saga can lose themselves in the upcoming series.

With so many critics throwing praise at The Mandalorian, we’re more excited than ever to dive into Jon Favreau’s story. Let’s just hope we love it as much as those who saw the early screening!
