Grey’s Anatomy season 16 episode 4 review: Everyone is pregnant and Tom is the worst

Another episode of Grey’s Anatomy has come and gone, and another surprise pregnancy has been revealed. Also, Tom is still the actual worst.

This post contains spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy season 16 episode 4 “It’s Raining Men.” Come back after you’ve watched the episode if you don’t want to know what happens.

Oh. So that’s why they chose that episode title. I wasn’t sure if I should laugh or cry so I did both. Anyway, moving on.

In case you needed a refresher, Tom Koracick is terrible.

He had nothing to do with a person falling off of a plane. He’s just generally the worst.

He has always been terrible, and aside from a few moments here and there, his character isn’t made to be likable. I don’t know, maybe I just have a soft spot for men buying houses and building baby cribs for people they care about.

We’ll treat that as the exception to The Ways of Koracick.

His willingness to offer a free surgery to a family just for good PR is an interesting contrast to Meredith being “forced” to do the unthinkable just to save a girl’s life. Maybe that’s why Jackson swooped in and made all of us like him again. Unless you never stopped.

Let’s just get this one last thing out of the way before we break it all down: PREGNANCY IS CONTAGIOUS AT GREY SLOAN MEMORIAL. Spread the word. That is all.

First it was Teddy — though that baby technically came to be in Germany, nowhere near Seattle, but still.

Then it was Amelia, who now seems happy and in love with Link (and I swear to God if anything happens to them I will riot).

And now it’s Miranda “I don’t have to fire anyone anymore because everyone is quitting” Bailey.

Did you see that coming? Because I did not.

I rolled my eyes at the menopause explanation for her acting hormonal but was willing to accept it anyway. She’s getting older, all this drama with Meredith Grey is forcing her to do a lot of reflecting. That’s fine. She’s due for some major character development. I can deal.

But a pregnancy? Really? When we just went through one and have already had a “surprise” pregnancy this season and we’re only four episodes in?

But WHY?

This is obviously setting up for Addison to come back for an episode or two right?

Sure, Kate Walsh is busy doing the Netflix thing and has long since moved on from Shondaland. But SO MANY BABIES. If they announce another pregnancy this season I’m going to throw something.

The fact that it’s the only thing that bothered me about this episode, however, is a pretty good sign.

They’re doing a really good job of balancing character storylines this season. I have yet to feel like they’re focusing too much on one person, and even last week’s guest stars didn’t feel forced or like they took away from the overarching plot.

The balance between funny and heartfelt also feels natural and good. You can laugh at the ridiculousness of a person falling off a plane because it’s so classic Grey’s, but you can also feel all the feelings when one of those patients doesn’t make it.

We were promised lighthearted, and that’s definitely what we’re getting. But it’s refreshing. The past few seasons got pretty dark, and that was fine for a while, but it was definitely time to change the tone. It’s working. I’m pleased.

I’m personally not pleased with Bailey’s pregnancy — where is it going? What’s the point? — but I’ll save my judgment for later. The fact that I didn’t see it coming could be me just not paying enough attention, or it could have been a well-executed twist. Or both. Debatable.

Anything that means more Ben and Miranda screen time is fine with me.
