Most of this week’s episode of Batwoman focused on the relationships between characters, but there was a twist involving Kate’s stepmother at the very end.

The most recent episode of Batwoman centered on the relationships between characters, delivering plenty of emotional scenes that helped invest viewers in their backstories. But while emotional tensions were high, there was also a big twist at the end that could have major implications for the plot: Why did Kate’s stepmother jump her and Sophie to steal Alice’s knife?

It was an eyebrow-raising moment when viewers discovered that Alice wasn’t the one who took her beloved knife back from her sister, but it could have easily been written off by another big bad. After all, if the series is to continue for more than a season, there’ll definitely be more villains Kate will need to face.

But the final moments of “The Rabbit Hole” show Catherine Hamilton-Kane telling one of her lackeys to dispose of Alice’s knife — prompting fans to wonder why in the world she wanted to get rid of evidence of Alice’s DNA in the first place.

The most obvious explanation would be that Catherine was partially responsible for the girl’s disappearance — or that she knew about her survival all these years and hid it from her husband. Her motive for either of these is currently unclear. It’s not as though having his daughter back would cause Jacob to leave his wife. It certainly wouldn’t bring back Kate and Beth’s mother.

Still, the circumstances surrounding Beth’s survival and return to Gotham are murky. She begins to explain some of what happened during the accident to Kate, but it’s mostly to guilt her sister for failing protect her. She doesn’t offer any details about how she managed to survive — or where she’s been all these years.

And of course, Alice does seem to have a vendetta against her father — one that feels a tad unwarranted if it’s just about the accident. Sure, he didn’t save her, but neither did Kate. It feels like there’s something bigger happening between Alice and Jacob, and that could very well play into whatever Catherine is up to.

It’s clear there’s more to the Kane family than meets the eye, and the first season of Batwoman will likely unravel whatever secrets are lurking beneath the surface. One thing is for certain though: A lot of people have a lot of explaining to do.
