Could an all-female Marvel movie be on the horizon?

The women of Marvel have been calling for an all-female film, and it sounds like the content of our dreams. Could we see such a movie anytime soon?

Earlier this week, Brie Larson revealed that she and the women of Marvel have been pushing Marvel president Kevin Feige for an all-female film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — a sentiment that actress Elizabeth Olsen later echoed her support for. And it seems even Feige himself is a fan of the idea, even if there aren’t currently any plans to make such a movie happen. But could an all-female film land on Marvel’s lineup at some point in the future?

The franchise has no doubt made strides in terms of highlighting women in its more recent stories, even if it still has a long way to go until the women of the MCU are on an equal playing field with their male counterparts. Still, female-centric scenes like the one toward the end of Avengers: Endgame prove that they’re at least trying to embrace the women of the MCU — and the lineup for Marvel’s Phase 4 seems promising on that count as well.

With female-led projects like Black Widow, WandaVision, and Thor: Love and Thunder on the way, it seems like the MCU could even be setting itself up for an all-female Avengers movie in the distant future. After all, each of the Avengers had to have their own stories told before they could team up to fight Loki back in 2012. And now that we’re telling women’s stories, it seems possible the franchise could build on that and head in the same general direction.

And honestly, we hope that’s the path the MCU is currently on. A superhero film completely centered on women is a huge step in the right direction for Marvel, and it’ll give us so much more insight into some of our favorite characters (many of whom have arguably been underutilized as side characters). I mean, seriously, who wouldn’t want to see Okoye and Shuri step up and take the lead on defeating a villain?

Elizabeth Olsen probably put it best in an interview with Buzzfeed News’ AM to DM morning show: “I feel like all the men in Marvel movies have done such a brilliant job with satisfying a lot of things our audiences want, and they’re funny and they’re talented. And so are all the women. And to give them more screentime, I think, would be a huge impact because comics aren’t just for boys who want to watch big boys.”

She’s certainly right on that count. The audience for Marvel movies is becoming increasingly diverse, so it makes sense that the franchise’s content would mirror that. And with so many fascinating female superheroes already present in the MCU — and plenty more on the way with all of the new films and series coming out — the opportunity to make them the faces of Marvel’s future is there. Let’s just hope it’s an opportunity Feige decides to take.
