NYCC 2019: 4 things we learned about My Hero Academia season 4
The fourth season of My Hero Academia drops this weekend, but New York Comic-Con attendees got to see footage from the new season just a little early. What did we learn about the upcoming episodes?
When it comes to popular anime series, My Hero Academia has quickly risen to the top over the last few years, captivating viewers with its combination of shonen-style action sequences and large cast of characters — all of whom are just as interesting as our protagonist. And, of course, Midoriya’s underdog story is the type that’ll attract just about anyone. But judging by our first look at this season, it looks like “underdog” may not be the best term to describe Midoriya anymore…
At New York Comic-Con, fans of My Hero Academia packed into the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden to watch the season 4 premiere, and things seem like they’re about to get far more intense for the students of U.A. High. Voice actors Justin Briner (Midoriya), Ricco Fajardo (Mirio), Colleen Clinkenbeard (Yaoyorozu), Kellen Goff (Overhaul), and Justin Cook (Kirishima) also sat down to discuss their thoughts on the previous season, along with where the anime is headed.
And amidst all the excitement, fans also got to see a brand new trailer for the series — one that confirms the new season is going to be dark and action packed.

Between the premiere screening, trailer, and conversation about season 4, what did we learn about what’s to come on the anime?
Midoriya’s getting a new mentor.
All Might is Midoriya’s idol, and he influences the boy a lot when it comes to becoming a hero. We’ve also seen All Might’s former mentor, Gran Torino, train Midoriya during internships, but it looks like Midoriya is getting a new mentor during the upcoming season of My Hero Academia — and he’s way more intimidating than the other two.
We meet Sir Nighteye during the season premiere, and the best word that can be used to describe him is, well, intense. Midoriya may struggle to keep up while training under this hero, but if anyone can help him master his quirk, it’s probably this guy.
Shigaraki isn’t the only Big Bad in town.
Shigaraki’s attempt to unite evildoers through the League of Villains has been a major plot point of the past few seasons, but it looks like All for One’s successor might have competition during season 4. Fans got a brief glimpse of the villain Overhaul at the end of season 3, but the premiere shows him challenging Shigaraki’s command over the other villains — and suggesting he’d do a better job of running the League.
The two certainly don’t start off on good footing, and it’s hard to imagine they’ll make nice as the series continues. So, will Midoriya and his friends be facing interference from two major villains in season 4? It’s possible.
Mirio will play a bigger role in season 4.
We meet Mirio at the end of the third season of My Hero Academia, when we’re introduced to the “Big Three,” the top upperclassmen at U.A. High. Mirio seems to be the high school’s number one student, and his cheery attitude and confidence are certainly well suited for a pro hero.
Given the emphasis placed on his introduction, it was clear that Mirio would reappear during season 4 — but it looks like he’ll be playing a bigger role than anyone except manga readers could have anticipated. We’re excited to see what he brings to the series as a more regular character — and how his presence will influence Midoriya’s journey to becoming a hero.
Kirishima is getting his own big moment.
Kirishima has had some pretty iconic moments during the first three seasons of the anime — most notably using his relationship with Bakugo to successfully rescue the boy from the League’s clutches — but it seems that the spotlight will really be on him during season 4.
While the voice actors and premiere didn’t share any specific details about what’s in store for our favorite red-headed hero, we do know that he’ll have a “big moment” — one we’d guess probably involves the special moves that the students of Class 1-A were practicing last season.
