Disney is finally giving us its first Jewish princess
A new Disney princess is coming to town, and she’s Jewish! Disney is adding another princess to its roster, and she’ll first appear on Eleanor of Avalor.
The time has finally come for all the little (and not so little) Jewish girls (and boys) who have been waiting for a Jewish Disney princess — and she has a voice!
Sopranos actress Jamie Lynn-Sigler has been cast as the voice of our new princess, and while her name and image haven’t been announced, it has been revealed that she’ll be making her first appearance on the third season of Eleanor of Avalor. The show is about a teenage princess and how she deals with her everyday life.
Lynn-Sigler took to Twitter to express her enthusiasm about her new role:
The episode will air in December and be, appropriately, Hanukkah-themed, just in time for the Jewish Festival of Lights. But this new character may not only be Jewish. She also hails from a Latino Jewish kingdom, so she might be Latina as well.
While Disney hasn’t always been great in the diversity department, this is a step in the right direction. If there was a Jewish Disney princess when I was growing up, I would have been obsessed with her.
As it was, I gravitated towards any princess with dark hair — which, at the time, meant Belle and Jasmine. I cannot wait to see what this new princess’ story is and how the episode plays out.
Hopefully, she gets the whole Disney treatment with toys, clothing, and all kinds of merchandise. There are plenty of kids (and maybe some adults) who would love to have something with a character on it that represents them.
