As The Walking Dead gets ready to celebrate a decade of apocalypse survival stories, there are some things we want this season to deliver.

The Walking Dead season 10 kicks off in just a couple of weeks. It’s hard to believe that this show has stayed relevant, interesting, and riveting for 10 years. And it looks like the show will hit even harder in season 10 as the long awaited Whisperer War ramps up — and the survivors will need to bring everything they have to the fight against Alpha and her massive undead army.

The Walking Dead is facing some challenges, though. Dania Gurira is leaving the show this season, so they need  to give Michonne an exit that will honor the fantastic work that Danai has put into molding this character into such a compelling woman (while still hopefully leaving open the possibility that she will appear in The Walking Dead movies with Rick Grimes).

The Walking Dead also needs to refill the ranks. Alpha’s gruesome attack on the settlements last season took 10 lives, with most of those victims coming from the Hilltop. The Kingdom has fallen, and the people from that community have taken refuge at Hilltop. But all of the communities are going to need more people, and people are a scarce resource at this point of the apocalypse.

And most of all, The Walking Dead needs to convince fans who have stayed with the franchise for 10 years that the story can be just as interesting, just as important, and just as heart-stopping as it was when the Grimes Family was the core of the narrative. There are several ways that they can do that, including these things that we’d like to see happen in The Walking Dead season 10.

A fitting exit for Michonne

After losing Rick Grimes last season — and Carl Grimes the season before that — it’s going to be a heavy blow to lose Michonne too. After seeing how the show gracefully handled Rick’s exit, there’s hope that they can get Michonne’s exit just right too.

The exit that most fans want is for her to find some sign that Rick is alive and go to find him, which would give her an opening to join The Walking Dead movies based on Rick Grimes. But there’s always the possibility that the warrior will fall in battle during the Whisperer War, and then fans will have to say a permanent goodbye. Whatever they do, they really need to get this right.

An Alpha/Carol face off

Alpha is a magnetic, mysterious, and murderous villain. Carol is a force of nature. The cosmic forces must align to bring these two together in some sort of face off or there will be some bitter disappointment. Carol is just as ruthless as Alpha in her own way, and she’s got a score to settle with Alpha for killing Henry. Carol needs justice — and vengeance — and so do the fans.

More Oceanside

The communities are starting fall. Now that the Kingdom has merged with Hilltop, there really needs to be more of an effort to bring Oceanside into the fold. There’s still so much about Oceanside we don’t know. It would be nice to find out more about that community and to see more of their involvement with the two primary communities of Hilltop and Alexandria.

Maggie’s return

The new characters that have come on board are breathing new life into The Walking Dead, and that’s good — it needed some. But the core of this show has always been the love and bond between the OGs. Even though Maggie isn’t technically an original because she came into the story in season 2, she’s almost an original. She and Hershel are Glenn’s legacy, and Glenn was definitely an OG. Hopefully the show’s negotiations with Lauren Cohan will end up with Maggie returning. Even if it’s for a couple of episodes, that would make many fans happy.

More representation

The multitude of deaths last season left some holes in The Walking Dead’s usually good representation spectrum. The Walking Dead has always been a big promoter of strong female characters, and it was fantastic to see a deaf actress, Lauren Ridloff, cast to play a deaf character instead of casting a hearing actress to play a deaf character. Her sister on the show, who is hard of hearing,  is played by Angel Theory, who is also hard of hearing.

But there has been some criticism leveled at the show for the consistent deaths of LGBTQ+ characters. Two LGBTQ+ characters died last season (Jesus and Tara). While it made sense for the narrative, it’s edging uncomfortably close to trope territory. Hopefully there will be more representation among the new characters that inevitably will be joining the show in season 10.
