Jenny Slate’s new Netflix comedy special, Jenny Slate: Stage Fright comes out this October. Learn more about her career to understand why you shouldn’t miss this special.

Jenny Slate has a Netflix special coming out on October 22 called Jenny Slate: Stage Fright. The special is part stand up and part documentary, and it looks into Slate’s childhood and fears, including the obvious element of overcoming stage fright. If you’re wondering if you should watch this special, just look at Jenny Slate’s career. Her passion for her work, her ability to transform into characters, and being stomach-achingly funny is present in all that she does.

Here are some moments from Jenny Slate’s career that will make you want to learn more about the star in her new special.

Saturday Night Live

Jenny Slate was a Season 35 cast member on Saturday Night Live (SNL) from 2009 to 2010. Her noteworthy sketches include “The Manuel Ortiz Show” with celebrity guest James Franco and “The Today Show,” playing Hoda Kotb with Kristen Wiig playing Kathie Lee.

Slate struggled with stage fright and having low self-esteem as a result of being fired from SNL. Working on SNL wasn’t a match for her, and she made mistakes like dropping the f-bomb live on TV and just not meeting the team’s expectations. Slate will talk about her SNL experience on Stage Fright, but you can learn more by watching her interview on The Off Camera Show with Sam Jones.

Watch the full interview here:

You can also hear her talk about her SNL experience and audition process on the podcast WTF with Marc Maron. Slate gets choked up when she describes calling her parents to say she made it on the show when she got the news from Loren Michael, the legendary producer, creator of SNL. Maron offered her some tissues, starting to cry himself. This interview shows Slate’s passion for her art and how much she had grown as an actress and comedian from when she was at her lowest.

Marcel the Shell With Shoes On

Marcel the Shell With Shoes On was Jenny Slate’s first huge success after her SNL stint. With her then-husband Dean Fleischer-Camp, she created a stop-motion animation series starring a mini shell with a googly eye and pink sneakers. Marcel the Shell talks to the camera — specifically, the voice interviewing him — about how his small world compares to the big world. Some memorable details include Marcel telling the camera he got a sunburn from staring at a diamond, his cholesterol went up to 900 after nibbling on a piece of cheese, and he drags a piece of lint around on a string to get close to the experience of owning a dog. These funny details come from the amazing mind of Slate and Fleisher-Camp.  Jenny voices Marcel with a unique small, cracky voice, and it’s extremely hard to replicate. Slate said the voice just came out of her one day and it inspired the character of Marcel.  This funny, cute voice plus the writing makes Marcel the Shell With Shoes On truly special.

Obvious Child

Slate stars in the indie movie Obvious Child. The movie was written and directed by Gillian Robespierre. Slate plays a struggling stand-up comedian named Donna Stern, who gets pregnant unexpectedly after an abrupt breakup. The movie shows the development of a new odd-ball romance and a woman finding herself. Abortion is also a part of the film’s storyline. Obvious Child approaches the topic of abortion in an honest, openminded, nonjudgmental manner. This movie is Jenny Slate’s first starring role in a film, and it received great reviews. The movie got a 91-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Jenny Slate shows that she can be a comedic and dramatic actress.

TV shows

Jenny Slate has worked on many TV shows. On House of Lies, she played Sarah Guggenheim for 11 episodes, and on Parks and Recreation, she played Mona-Lisa for 10 episodes. On the Kroll Show, she played the characters Liz B., Ruth Diamond Phillips, Denise, Maureen, and Prosecution Attorney for 14 episodes. And she was on many others like Bob’s Burgers. Jenny Slate has a recurring role on the Netflix animated TV series Big Mouth.  She voices the character of Missy, a nerdy biracial middle school girl with braces and nasally voice, who, like the other characters, is trying to get through puberty unscathed. When Slate plays a character on a TV show, it’s memorable. Her versatile acting skills has booked her many gigs!

Animated movies

Jenny Slate has been in several animated movies in addition to her TV career. She played Gidget, a pampered cat, in The Secret Life of Pets; Bellweather, the sheep mayor’s assistant who ends up being the villain, in Zootopia; the voice of Harley Quinn in The Lego Batman Movie; and more. Jenny Slate’s ability to manipulate her voice has given her a successful career in voice work.

Talk show appearances

Jenny Slate’s natural humor shines through in her talk show appearances. The talk show hosts look genuinely interested in her stories, laughing along with her and leaning in her direction, waiting to hear more. One of Slate’s popular appearances, with about 987k views on YouTube, is her appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers.  In this interview, she talks about being high during her college years at Columbia University. She confused astronomy class with astrology and embarrassed herself in front of the class when she was trying to present to the class completely stoned! The video is below. (Make sure you pee first before watching.)

Slate has told other funny stories with other hosts like Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, and Conan. Slate’s ability to tell great stories, and engage the audience and host lets you know that the stand-up section of her special is going to be entertaining.

Jenny Slate’s new Netflix comedy special coming out is the result of her diverse, successful career and natural talent. Make sure to watch her new special to see what this amazing, talented woman’s new work looks like. You will not be disappointed because she continues to prove that she creates great comedy no matter what setting she’s in.
