Game of Thrones actor Richard Dormer is joining The Watch — no, not the one at Castle Black. He’ll be tackling the lead role in BBC’s upcoming adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels.

Richard Dormer may have fulfilled his duties to the Red God on HBO’s Game of Thrones, but it doesn’t look like the actor is ready to make his exit from the fantasy world just yet. In fact, his next role will be the lead in BBC America’s The Watch, an adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s highly praised Discworld series.

Dormer will be playing Sam Vimes, the captain of The Watch, an organization attempting to prevent anarchy in a city where crime has become legal. The series’ synopsis sounds a bit like The Purge meets epic fantasy, and it presents a major problem for a character like Dormer’s, whose place in society has essentially been rendered obsolete.

“I’m so thrilled to be part of this brilliant madness and mayhem!” Dormer said of his new role. “I was immediately drawn to the multitude of layers to Sam Vines, and I find the dynamic between him and his band of disenfranchised comrades very compelling.”

If there’s anything we know about Dormer after watching him play Beric Dondarrion for years, it’s that he can handle madness and mayhem — especially when traveling with a band of misfits much like himself. The role of Sam Vines is going to be a perfect one for him, and we can’t wait to see what he brings to the small screen as a main character.

Other cast members for The Watch were also announced, including Jo Eaton-Kent, Marama Corlette, Laura Rossi, Adam Hugill, and Sam Adewunmi. With names like these already involved, looks like the city of Ankh-Morpork is going to be full of talent when it hits the small screen.

The eight-episode series is set to begin filming within the next few months, meaning we’ll hopefully see a release date sometime in 2020. With so many epic fantasy series heading our way, we’ll have plenty to fill the void of Game of Thrones — though seeing Dormer’s face every episode will definitely make us miss it all over again.
