Robert Downey Jr. may be returning to the MCU for an Ironheart series
Although Avengers: Endgame brought Iron Man’s story to a close, it seems that Robert Downey Jr. might be returning to the MCU for a Disney+ series.
It’s been a rough year for Marvel fans. Not only did Avengers: Endgame bring Iron Man’s and Captain America’s storylines to a close, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe also unexpectedly lost one of its most beloved heroes recently: Spider-Man. We don’t feel so well, indeed.
But even though the MCU is beginning to shift its focus to a new lineup of heroes, it seems that not all parties are ready to say goodbye to the originals just yet. According to We’ve Got This Covered, sources have suggested that Robert Downey Jr. might be making a return to the MCU — and yes, he’d be playing Iron Man once again.
Of course, given Iron Man’s fate at the end of Avengers: Endgame, the actor wouldn’t be picking things up where we last left off. Instead, he’d be tackling the role of Tony Stark as an AI, an addition to an animated Ironheart series that may be in the works for Disney’s new streaming platform, Disney+.
This means Iron Man would no longer be the star of the show, but instead would likely find himself advising the teenage genius who becomes Ironheart instead. As an AI, it’s likely Tony would find himself the voice of one of Ironheart’s suits. And he’s had plenty of experience with J.A.R.V.I.S., so he’ll know exactly what he’s doing.
Nothing has been confirmed yet, but fans have been vying for an Ironheart series or film for a while now. And with Phase 4 of the MCU so uncertain, this would be the perfect time to exceed their expectations — and bring one of their favorite actors back into the fold.
As for how the series could fit into the MCU’s timeline, your guess is as good as ours. With Doctor Strange 2 and What If…? delving into different timelines, almost anything is possible. But we would love to see Tony reunite with his family for a minute, even if it’s just as an AI…
