What If?

You’re probably sick of hearing about Marvel stuff, but we’ve got one more and it looks like a doozy. What If…? will take audiences down new paths in the MCU, positing the question of how things would be different if one event were changed. There will be one animated episode for every Marvel film to debut sometime in 2021.

The animation on the series is certainly eye-catching, reminiscent of Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly with modern cartoon influences. More importantly, the first footage showed us just what choices could be made, including everything from a zombie Captain America to what if Peggy Carter were the one to take up the shield. (Hayley Atwell was also at the panel,  giving us hope for a possible Agent Carter reboot down the line.)

Right now, there’s a ton of speculation about what other MCU changes could happen down the line. The best I’ve heard is seeing what could happen if that radioactive spider bit Mary-Jane instead of Peter, though I’m not sure how that works with the whole Sony snafu. There was plenty of what was shown to whet appetites and give more marginalized characters a chance to take center stage.
