Viola Davis has had the power of a first lady inside her all along

Viola Davis will soon step into yet another role that’s so perfect it’s like it was made for her: Former First Lady Michelle Obama. She’s more earned the honor.

TV networks are no stranger to political dramas — it seems like every major station has one. But while shows about politics may be plentiful, there is no such thing as too much Viola Davis.

Showtime is developing a series set in the East Wing of the White House. Davis will serve not only as the show’s executive producer, but will also portray former First Lady Michelle Obama onscreen.

(Yes, really.)

First Ladies will dive deep into the political and personal happenings of some of the most memorable FLOTUSes in history.

We are ALL IN. Of course we are. This could be a show composed entirely of hour-long episodes featuring nothing more than Davis sitting at a desk typing on a laptop and we’d be all in.

This news came shortly after Davis announced her final day on the set of hit ABC drama How to Get Away With Murder, which will end after its upcoming sixth season. So there we were, feeling pretty awful about this fast-approaching farewell, when SURPRISE.

Goodbyes are temporary. Viola Davis is forever. As she should be.

When you’re watching an actor play a role, you want to forget you’re watching an actor play a role. You might turn on an episode of How to Get Away With Murder and think, “Oh hey, it’s Viola Davis.” But it quickly ceases to be Viola Davis saying lines on your screen and becomes Annalise Keating being her usual kick-butt self. She’s THAT kind of actor. She doesn’t just put on a show. She provides an experience.

Clearly we’re not the only ones convinced she needs more opportunities to stand center stage.

Like many in her profession, Davis started out leaping from supporting role to supporting role — not that this hasn’t paid off. Her sole Academy Award (so far) was for Best Supporting Actress in Fences — a true honor since the actor she “supported” just happened to be Denzel Washington.

But after dozens of credits as a supporting actress, her role on How to Get Away With Murder earned her an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress In a Drama Series (2015), not including four additional nominations for the same award — for the same role — since then. And those are just the Emmys.

This is my official petition to rename the following clip “How to Win An Emmy In 90 Seconds.”

And that’s only one example of many, many more.

At this point we’ve seen Davis in pretty much every suitable role imaginable. Fierce, relentless lawyer with a dark side? Check. Abused wife and mother of a broken, troubled child? Check. History-making first lady with an equally legendary arm workout? Soon-to-be check.

I’m willing to guess choosing Davis to take on the role of Obama wasn’t a difficult one. They are nearly the same age (Obama is one year older). They are both strong, powerful women of color. And they both have absolutely flawless arms.

Getting the chance to play a first lady on television is an opportunity any actress would be honored to take on. Getting to portray Michelle Obama is definitely an honor that must be earned. And Davis has more than earned it.

The first season of the series will explore the lives of Betty Ford and Eleanor Roosevelt as well Obama — so whenever the show does premiere, you won’t have to wait long to see Davis in all her glory.
