Kit Harington is joining the MCU, but who could he play?
Recent reports suggest that Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But what Marvel character will he play?
The internet positively exploded yesterday when media channels began reporting that Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Deadline was the first outlet to reveal this, claiming that sources confirmed the actor would be joining one of Kevin Feige’s future superhero projects.
And Harington wouldn’t be the first person to make the transition from Game of Thrones to Marvel. Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams, both of whom played his sisters in the HBO series, have already joined the X-Men franchise, and it was recently announced that Richard Madden had joined the cast of The Eternals.
But when it comes to the details surrounding Harington’s MCU role, we have a lot in common with Jon Snow: We know nothing. Marvel’s Phase 4 lineup has plenty of films the actor could make an appearance in, and there’s always the possibility that he’ll surprise us by taking the lead in a new project.
Deadline suggested that it will be a film that Harington appears in, not a television project, ruling out the many Disney+ series heading our way. But of the Phase 4 movies planned, Harington could appear in include Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, or Thor: Love and Thunder.
The Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will introduce all new casts of characters into the MCU, so there are likely plenty of roles for Harington to fall into. But even the other three films are sure to introduce new villains and supporting characters — the question is, could Harington pull off the villain part?
And Harington isn’t limited to Phase 4 roles. It’s possible he could be in talks to play someone in a film slated later on Marvel’s timeline, like Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, or Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
Some fans seem convinced that he’ll become the next Wolverine, a theory based mostly on the actor’s height — although we suppose we could see Harington pulling off the scruffy appearance as well. Honestly, we’re not sure we’re ready to say goodbye to Hugh Jackman just yet, but if anyone had to replace him, it might as well be Harington.
Whoever the actor winds up playing, it’s certain that Game of Thrones fans will be tuning in to see how he fares in his next role. Perhaps we’ll get more details as Disney’s D23 Expo continues this weekend, revealing further plans for the company’s film and television lineup.
