Bad news for Taylor Swift spells good news for Swifties. After her music catalogue was purchased by Scooter Braun when he acquired Big Machine records, Taylor is re-recording all of her songs so that she once again has the rights to her own music.

Though we’ve known for a few months now that we’d be getting new music from Taylor Swift in the form of her upcoming album Lover, legal troubles have resulted in Swifties getting much, much more music than we had predicted.

Earlier this year, Taylor Swift very publicly announced her displeasure about the fact that Scooter Braun would soon have total control over her masters — aka her music catalogue. Braun’s ownership over her music comes from his recent purchase of her former record label, Big Machine Records. As a result of Braun’s acquisition, Swift has essentially lost the rights to her own music, which she made clear when she posted about it on her social media:

According to Swift’s Tumblr post, she was blindsided by Braun’s sudden acquisition of her music, and felt especially jaded, due to the years of  “incessant and manipulative bullying” she allegedly faced at the hands of Braun. From her perspective, she was blindsided by the transaction, and rendered helpless while being virtually boxed out of the ownership of her own music. In her own words, “my music legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.”

However, all is not lost for Swift. After Swift’s initial post, many celebrities voiced their support of Taylor, one of whom was fellow pop star Kelly Clarkson.

Clarkson suggested that Swift re-record her discography. And if Taylor’s most recent interview is to be believed, that’s exactly what she’s going to do. In her recent talk with CBS, she revealed that she “absolutely” plans to re-record her catalog so that she once again is the sole owner of her music.

What Swift is suggesting is a bold move, but it’s one that will give her control over her own work again — and we respect that.
