After adding two more cast members, Jordan Peele’s next project, a remake of the classic horror movie Candyman, began shooting in Chicago

It’s not a stretch to say that Jordan Peele is one of the most talked-about directors working in Hollywood right now, so the excitement is pretty high when it comes to his next project. Although his first two films, Get Out and Us were horror/thrillers based on original concepts, his third project is set to break that pattern.

Peele’s third movie, which recently began shooting in Chicago, will be a remake of the classic horror movie Candyman. The original 1992 movie itself was based on a short story written by Hellraiser creator Clive Barker and centers around the urban legend of a man who can be summoned by saying “candyman” five times into a mirror.

Though the premise may make it seem like your run of the mill slasher, the original Candyman garnered praise for its atmospheric visuals, gripping score, and strong narrative themes that elevated it from standard horror flick to cinema classic. For many, the most interesting part of Candyman is the film’s use of themes like race relations, poverty, and folklore to drive the plot – all three of which are likely aspects that drew Peele to the project as well.

Cowritten by Peele and his frequent collaborator Win Rosenfeld (BlackKklansman, The Twilight Zone), Candyman will be directed by Nia DaCosta. The cast was already set to include Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) and Teyonah Paris (If Beale Street Could Talk), but recent news revealed that Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits) and Paris’ Beale Street costar Colman Domingo would also be joining the franchise. And, before you ask, it’s unclear whether or not the Candyman himself, Tony Todd, will be making an appearance in this “spiritual successor”.

Horror reboots don’t exactly have a history of being well-received, so initially, many fans may have been wary when word broke that such a well-loved classic would be getting a reboot. However, there’s no doubt in our minds that if anyone can do the original justice, it’s Jordan Peele.
