Katey Brooks is not your typical musician, and with a history that includes growing up in a cult and coming out, her new album is a masterpiece of empowerment.

You may not have heard of Katey Brooks before now, but once you hear her story and listen to her music, she may just become a new favorite addition to your playlist. And considering her music can be found on Spotify, there is nothing wrong with indulging in a new artist who can take your breath away.

In a story that seems like a made-for-TV movie, the singer actually grew up in a cult. And it’s because of music that she was able to find strength and an escape from the world she lived in. According to Brooks, “It was a very chaotic upbringing, full of some pretty colorful, and sometimes unsavory, characters. But when I sang, I felt free and connected.”

And yet, even with her childhood and the losses she has faced (first her mother and then a friend who passed away), through music, Katey Brooks has been able to give the world songs that express the passion the singer has within herself. With her new album Revolute, listeners are treated to music that blends many genres, including country and soul.

Listen to her song “Never Gonna Let Her Go” here:

From “Never Gonna Let Her Go” to “Burn It Down,” every song on this album tells a story of love, loss, and acceptance. There is a passion not only within the lyrics, but also in the vocals themselves. And considering every song is about being true to one’s self, there is something genuinely empowering about all of Revolute.

Perhaps what makes Katey Brooks one of my new favorite singers is the fact that she has no problem being her most authentic self. And with the help of her music, we can all see that. From being willing to come out and be honest about her sexuality to opening up about her childhood, there is so much inspiration to be found from the singer. And with Revolute, we have an album that is as entertaining as it is a statement.
