Danai Gurira and Melissa McBride of The Walking Dead were both nominated for the Best Supporting Actress in a TV Show Saturn Award.

The Walking Dead picked up a slew of Saturn award nominations this year, including a nod for Best Horror TV Show. Two of the show’s most popular actresses were also nominated for the same award. Both Melissa McBride and Danai Gurira were nominated in the Best Supporting Actress on a TV Show category for their roles as Carol Peletier and Michonne.

Other actresses nominated in the category include Gwendoline Christie for Game of Thrones, Lena Headey for Game of Thrones, Sophie Turner for Game of Thrones, Rhea Seerhorn for Better Call Saul, and Sophie Skelton for Outlander.

McBride and Gurira have some serious competition in this category given that all of the actresses nominated turned in powerful performances this year, particularly the women of Game of Thrones. But on The Walking Dead last season Michonne and Carol both had transformative story arcs that propelled their characters into completely new places and both actresses delivered stellar performances.

The Walking Dead season 10 is getting ready to air in October and there’s no doubt that both  McBride and Gurira will continue to wow audiences with the strength and complexity of their characters. Sadly, this will be the last for Gurira. She plans to exit the series in season 10 but will hopefully join Andrew Lincoln in the Walking Dead movies based on Rick Grimes that AMC is developing.

The Saturn Awards

The Saturn Awards are presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. Originally the Academy was founded to honor the best in genre films but over the year sit has expanded to include science fiction, fantasy, and horror TV and streaming media as well as films.
