The first trailer for The King’s Man, a prequel to Kingsman, shows a change in look and tone for the action franchise.

Ever since it was announced that the Kingsman franchise would be getting a prequel, fans have been waiting to see where this new addition would take the bombastic, blood-filled series. Now that the first trailer has dropped, it looks like The King’s Man will be taking Kingsman in a whole new direction.

Watch the trailer for The King’s Man here:

The King’s Man takes the franchise back in time to World War I, where the Duke of Oxford (played by Ralph Fiennes) must race against time to avert a global catastrophe. From the looks of the trailer, it seems as though the Duke may be going up against some of history’s most notorious men, including Rasputin.

However, much more surprising than the setting of the movie is the drastic change in tone. Thanks to Matthew Vaughn’s gory directorial style, the Kingsman franchise made a name for itself by being explosive, bloodthirsty, and at times downright silly. Even if they had some troubles when it came to sexism and diversity in casting, the films still recieved praise for their revitalization of the often formulaic spy genre.

This new trailer, however, seems to point the franchise in a different direction. Gone are the wisecracking spies and larger-than-life villains — in their place, a much more grounded and traditionally cinematic tone.

Some viewers have already been quick to compare the cinematography of the new trailer to that of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen or Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman  — both films that take a more grounded approach to over-the-top concepts.

But it’s not just the tone that’s different; the entire cast has been overhauled as well. Because the modern day cast hadn’t even been born by the time that The King’s Man is set to take place, the cast is chock full of newcomers. Taron Egerton and Colin Firth are gone for now. Instead, the cast features Aaaron Taylor-Johnson, Gemma Arterton, Djimon Hounsou, Stanley Tucci, and Charles Dance.

For those eager to see just how much The King’s Man will be changing from the first two installments, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer. The King’s Man hits theaters on Valentine’s Day 2020.
