Kevin Feige says Spider-Man 3 will feature a storyline we haven’t seen before

The mid-credits scene for Spider-Man: Far From Home left fans wondering what comes next for Peter Parker. According to Kevin Feige, it’s something completely new to the screen.

Warning! This story contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Spider-Man: Far From Home was full of twists and turns, but nothing was quite so surprising as Mysterio’s final trick during the mid-credits scene. Just when it looks like Peter has defeated the master of illusions and is totally in the clear, a news station releases an update from The Daily Bugle. (J.K. Simmons even returns to make the broadcast.)

The Daily Bugle plays a video that’s been tampered with by Mysterio and his cronies, making it look like Spider-Man was the person who ordered the drone attack in London. But as if villainizing Spider-Man doesn’t place Peter in enough danger, Mysterio delivers a final line that threatens everything right before the video cuts out: “Spider-Man is Peter Parker.” Yikes.

With his secret identity unveiled — and the rumors that he authorized a terrorist attack — Spider-Man’s future isn’t looking all that promising. Being a vigilante behind a mask is one thing, but the truth about Peter places him and his loved ones right in the line of fire. And because of that, fans have begun questioning where the rest of the franchise will take him.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige responded to questions regarding Spider-Man 3 during an interview with Fandango — and it looks like there are big plans for the third installment. Not only does it sound like Peter will indeed be facing the consequences of that broadcast, but Feige claims that the next film will tackle a Spider-Man story that hasn’t been brought to film yet.

“And now people know Peter’s identity,” Feige said. “People now think he’s a villain, Mysterio plays one last trick on him and succeeds… [so that] means everything’s different. Where it goes, we’ll see. But it’s exciting that it once again sets us up for a Peter Parker story that has never been done before on film.”

That statement rules out the possibility of Venom or Carnage making an appearance in the next Spider-Man film, further darkening Peter’s image. It also means the Green Goblin/Hob Goblin story is out. As MCU Cosmic mentions, fans have suggested that the MCU could pull from the “One More Day” comics, which kill off Aunt May and pit Peter against a demon called Mephisto. It’s a dark take to say the least, and we’d hate to see Aunt May’s relationship with Happy come to such a bitter end.

After the mid-credits scene, though, it’s also a plausible way the story could play out. It would also work Dr. Strange back into Spider-Man’s storyline, pairing them up for Marvel’s fourth phase.

Of course, there are plenty of other unadapted storylines the MCU can base Spider-Man 3 on as well. Whatever they decide to do, one thing is certain: Peter’s going to be in more than a few sticky situations.
