It was recently announced that The Office will be leaving Netflix in 2021, but that doesn’t mean you should cancel your subscription just yet. Here are five Netflix Originals to watch once The Office is gone.
The announcement millions have been dreading is finally upon us, and this time it’s official: NBC’s smash hit comedy The Office will be leaving Netflix in 2021. The comedy juggernaut and pop culture icon will be leaving in favor of NBC’s upcoming streaming service, but just because The Office is gone, it doesn’t mean you should give up on Netflix for good.
Here are five Netflix original series to binge watch so that you can fill the massive, Office-shaped hole in your heart.
Bojack Horseman
Don’t let the brightly animated characters fool you. Bojack Horseman is a dark comedy that uses its bizarre visuals to offset a deeply relatable story about the struggles of a has-been celebrity living in L.A. Though its sense of humor may be a little raunchier than that of The Office, at its core, the two shows both tell personal, grounded stories about the trials of day to day life. Bojack Horseman also has a killer cast, with Will Arnett playing the title character, and an ensemble that includes Allison Brie, Aaron Paul, Kristen Schaal, Patton Oswalt, and Lisa Kudrow.
It’s already 5 seasons deep, so if you’re looking for an excuse to stay indoors and order takeout, consider giving Bojack Horseman a try.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Maybe animated horses aren’t your thing, and you’re looking for a familiar face after the tragic and sudden loss of the Dunder Mifflin staff from your screen. Not to worry, there’s a hilarious Netflix comedy that fits the bill: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Starring The Office alum Ellie Kemper, the show focuses around Kimmy, a young woman who spent 15 years in a doomsday cult, only to escape and begin experiencing the outside world for the first time. The show also stars Titus Burgess and 30 Rock star Jane Krakowski, so you know you’re in for a wildly funny ride.
Arrested Development
If you don’t want to stray too far from the dry, sardonic humor of The Office, try looking into Arrested Development. Though the show’s original run on Fox was cut short in 2006, its status as a cult classic led Netflix to renew it for two additional seasons. Though the first few seasons are now almost 15 years old, Netflix’s revival of the show has led to it gaining a second win of new popularity. The writing is sharp, the acting is deadpan, and it’ll give you all the laughs you’ll be missing once The Office is gone.
Master of None
If you’re a fan of workplace comedies, you might recognize the star of the next entry on this list, Master of None. Starring Aziz Ansari of Parks and Recreation fame, Master of None tells the story of an actor struggling to find his identity while also juggling his career and romantic life. Partially based on Aziz Ansari’s own personal experience, Master of None has its writer as its star, a trait it shares with several cast members on The Office.
Russian Doll
Last but certainly not least is a left-field pick for those looking to branch out from the straight comedy genre. Russian Doll blends science fiction and fantasy elements with comedy as it tells the story of Nadia, a young woman who finds herself stuck repeating the same day over and over again. Starring Emmy-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black), Russian Doll is a dark yet playful twist on the Groundhog Day dilemma and provides plenty of comedy for those looking to laugh in The Office‘s absence.
