Fear The Walking Dead review: Dwight is finally here

In Fear The Walking Dead’s “Humbug’s Gulch”, John Dorie reveals some of his past to June and Savior Dwight makes his first appearance.

It’s safe to say a lot went down in the third episode of Fear The Walking Dead‘s fifth season. In “Humbug’s Gulch” the group takes a methodical approach to finding out who is leaving the walker roadblocks by systematically taking them down in teams while Luciana plots all the locations where they found the roadblocks on a map.

As Morgan and Alicia take out walker roadblocks in one direction John and June take them out in another direction. The locations start to form a circle when plotted on the map and it’s clear that someone is trying to protect their location.

But, while working on clearing the walker road blocks John and June take fire from an unknown assailant. They end up taking cover in Humbug’s Gulch, an Old West style tourist trap.

John reveals to June that before the apocalypse he had sometimes performed in places like that. He knew where the guns and ammunition for shooting displays were kept and together they are able to amass big haul of weapons and ammunition.

Unfortunately, the dead stack up in the streets, and a dust storm picks up, making it hard for everyone to escape. Our Fear crew then gets into a firefight and the tires of their car are shot out by Dwight. That’s right — Savior Dwight from The Walking Dead finally has arrived on Fear The Walking Dead!

Dwight’s mission to find Sherry

Dwight’s arrival brings with it some fine character development and fantastic acting from Austin Amelio. Dwight has been looking for Sherry ever since the end of All Out War on The Walking Dead. She’s been leaving him notes and messages so that he can track her. He tracked her to the car taken by John and June, but it turns out to be the wrong car.

Dwight, about to give up his search and let the walkers overrun his car because he can’t handle another dead-end, gets some words of wisdom from both June and John about the power of love and why it’s worth fighting for. Dwight tells John and June to leave him but they refuse, and together they all fight their way out of Humbug’s Gulch.

Seeing Dwight on Fear The Walking Dead ties the two worlds together in a wonderful way. When Fear The Walking Dead debuted it was said that the two shows would remain independent and never have characters crossover but it was a smart decision to reverse that policy.

AMC is trying to create a multi-show universe for The Walking Dead franchise so crossing characters over is a smart way to get fans to emotionally invest in a new corner of The Walking Dead world.

It was great to see Dwight again, and he’s going to a really interesting addition to the crew that’s in place now. He plans on still looking for Sherry of course, but he also might be persuaded to help the group in their mission to help people. Morgan, Alicia, Luciana, and the others are all looking for redemption and Dwight definitely is looking for that too.

Who is setting up roadblocks?

Morgan and Alicia are still focused on finding Al, but there’s still no sign of her or whoever took her. It’s clear that someone really wants to drive them away from the area since they are going through the trouble to set up roadblocks, mount walker heads in trees, and put out spike strips designed to flatten tires.

The survivors should take the hint that whoever is setting up such a grim perimeter doesn’t want to be found but Alicia isn’t going to be scared off walker roadblocks when Al might be being held prisoner by whoever is trying to scare them off.

Viewers know, of course, that Al isn’t in the area and the helicopter people took her. But it’s unlikely that Morgan, Alicia, and the others would ever guess what has really happened to Althea so they’re going to have a big challenge ahead trying to find her. First they will have to figure out who is hiding from them and what they’re hiding.
