5 BFF vacation movies to inspire your summer plans

Summer is finally here and it’s time to round up your besties and plan that vacay! Why not get some inspiration from these five BFF vacation movies?

As June slowly creeps in, most of us are still recovering from a long, frigid winter that seemed like it would never end. But it did and now it’s time to celebrate that! Summer is the time for drinks by the pool, barbecues, picnics, and anything else you can think of that involves soaking up the sun and enjoying the nice weather while it lasts.

If you’re lucky enough to head out on vacation this summer, why not round up your BFFs and start planning your big trip with inspiration from the big screen? There are so many great road trip and vacation movies where female friendship takes center stage, and if that’s not the perfect way to model your vacays, then what is?

And if you can’t swing a trip this season, why not binge these movies anyway and live vicariously through them? Here are five movies with BFF trips to inspire your summer plans — just don’t take too much inspiration from some of them!

Crossroads

Even though the road trip in Crossroads hit a few snags, that doesn’t mean it was bad. You might hit some roadblocks this summer and what’s important is how you bounce back. Lucy (played by Britney Spears) originally went on her cross-country voyage to find her mother, who left her and her dad when she was just a kid, and even though that didn’t turn out as she planned, the trip helped her reconnect with her childhood BFFs Kit and Mimi (Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning). It also led to her meeting bad boy Ben (Anson Mount), who ended up being exactly what good girl Lucy needed.

Thelma & Louise

Okay, so maybe Thelma & Louise isn’t the perfect movie to model your summer after, but let’s look at some of the finer details. The friendship and pure love that Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon) have for each other is inspiring. When Thelma was in a bad situation, Louise came to her rescue in more ways than one, and she risked her own well-being while doing it. In the end, they were the ultimate ride or die, and that’s a pretty great lesson to apply to your summer adventures.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Is there any movie that captures a realistic female friendship quite like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? Even though you probably won’t find a magical pair of jeans that you share with all of your friends (without washing them, still gross), the friendship between Lena, Bridget, Tibby, and Carmen is the ultimate BFF goals.

Even when they’re torn to different parts of the world for the summer — Lena in Greece, Bridget in Mexico, Carmen in South Carolina, and Tibby stuck at home in Maryland — they still have a connection that can’t be broken, and keep each other informed of all their romances, misadventures, and more. Luckily, we have technology nowadays that makes it way easier than in 2005, but maybe writing letters to each other will make it even more special!

Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion

Isn’t everyone just searching for the Romy to their Michele? In Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion, we’re introduced to Romy (Mira Sorvino) and Michele (Lisa Kudrow), two girls living in LA who find out their 10 year high school reunion is happening in Tucson. They decide to try and make big changes in their life in order to impress all the classmates who teased them in high school, but it proves harder than they thought.

They may be the best friends anyone could ever ask for, but their road trip proves that even the tightest of friendships can be tested. In the end, though, they realize that they don’t care what their classmates think, because they love being unique and as long as they have each other, they couldn’t be happier.

Girls Trip

The summer is a time for fun, when you can finally get out and have adventures outdoors and not feel judged for drinking in public in the middle of the day. That’s why Girls Trip is the ultimate BFF vacation movie, because these women take a trip to New Orleans to let loose and they definitely go wild! Maybe your partying won’t end with you peeing from a zip line or showing your friends the grapefruit technique, but if you can have even a fraction of the fun as the girls in this movie, then your summer will definitely be a success.
