It’s no secret that the Duchess of Sussex has faced much criticism in the British press. Now, Priyanka Chopra is coming to her good friend’s defense.

In a recent interview with The Sunday TimesPriyanka Chopra came to the defense of her royal pal, Meghan Markle.

For those unaware, the former Quantico star and Markle have had a close friendship before she even met Prince Harry. So, it’s understandable why Chopra feels the need to come to Markle’s defense, especially after the British royal family member continues to take negative hits in the press.

Chopra said she believes “racism” is the reason Markle has faced so much backlash. “For sure, 100 percent,” Chopra said. “Of course it has to do with racism, it’s an obvious reason. But the beauty of Meg is that she’s been herself through all of this.”

The Isn’t It Romantic actress also added that Markle is still the same person she was before marrying Harry in May 2018 and having their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, on May 6, 2019.

“Now that she’s got a real platform, she talks about the same things she always did,” Chopra noted. “We spent hours speaking about the difference that influence and dialogue can make to the world before this whole thing happened, so what you see now is authentically her. She’s always been the girl wanting to move the needle.”

For those out of the loop, Markle has been accused of causing friction between Harry and Prince William. If that isn’t enough, Markle was also shamed for how she cradled her baby bump when she was pregnant with Archie. Then there’s Donald Trump’s remarks about the Duchess of Sussex, calling her “nasty” when he learned of her criticisms of him during the 2016 election season.

Like Chopra, even George Clooney spoke up on Markle’s behalf in March. He told Good Morning Britain, “I think it’s a little unfair at times when – I’ve seen it when the press can turn on you for sort of ridiculous reasons and for almost nothing, and it seemed to me to be a little unjust since [Meghan] hadn’t done anything except just happen to live her life.”

A group of Markle’s friends also wrote a letter for People defending Markle and to stop the “global bullying” she’s faced.

As upsetting as it is to see your friend and someone as lovely as Markle constantly scrutinized, Chopra said the former Suits actress won’t let it discourage her from making a difference or living her life.

“If there’s anyone who can handle it, it’s her,” Chopra told The Sunday Times.

Really, Chopra put it best when she told the publication, “Meghan is such a progressive, modern girl. She’s what the world is today — a self-made woman who looks like each one of us. I mean, she’s stunning, but she is so completely herself.”
