Party of Five reboot gives us an emotional trailer tackling deportation

We now have our first look at the new Party of Five reboot. And the emotional trailer is everything we could have wanted and more as it tackles the hard topic of deportation.

When it comes to reboots, it seems that the television landscape is filled with them, from the new takes on Beverly Hills, 90210 to Roswell, NM. So it likely comes as no surprise that I was a bit skeptical when I heard that they were rebooting Party of Five. However, once I saw the new trailer for the reboot I was sold.

In the first look at the Party of Five revival from Freeform, we get an emotional look at a family torn apart by deportation. This is a topic that is extremely important in our current society, and seeing it tackled on-screen in a way that feels raw and honest is something we need. Perhaps the only other series that has even touched on this topic is the previously mentioned Roswell, NM reboot, and even then the storyline has taken a backseat to other issues.

Knowing that the topic of deportation will not just be a talking point for Party of Five, but an actual, integral part of the storyline makes this a reboot that feels more relevant than many others. After all, this feels more like a ripped-from-the-headlines story, than a fictional tale.

Not only do we get to see this family being torn apart, but the trailer even gives us a look at the aftermath, and what happens to the family members left behind. Based on this trailer, we are going to watch as the children of the couple deported learn how to survive together as a family without their parents there to guide them. And yes, that means that there are going to be a lot of issues to contend with, including social services.

While there is definitely little hints that there is anger and pain there for these characters, there are also the heartfelt moments as well, such as when one of the brothers points out that, “they figured it out. So will we.” Of course, the “they” in this situation is their parents, and it makes sense that even with their parents not there, the children are going to look to them as an example of how to survive.

Although the original series also followed a set of five siblings who had to figure out how to move on after the loss of their own parents, this reboot certainly has a different feel to it. It likely has to do with the way the children are being separated from their parents. In the original Party of Five, the family lost their parents to a drunk driver, whereas in this case, the parents are still alive.

Granted, there is a political undertone to the series with deportation being the reason for the family being separated, but at its heart,* it still feels like a show about being a family no matter what comes your way. Having a series that will truly showcase what happens when members of a family are deported makes this not just a fresh take on the show, but also something that more people should be watching.
