Next week’s episode of Game of Thrones promises another battle, this time between Daenerys’ army and Cersei’s. Who will come out on top?
Warning: This story contains spoilers for Game of Thrones.
If Game of Thrones fans were expecting time to recooperate after the Battle of Winterfell, that’s not what they got during the fourth episode of season eight. “The Last of the Starks” wasted no time jumping straight into the action, and judging by the promo for next week’s episode, it looks as though the fifth episode will be even more intense than this one.
Watch the teaser for the next episode here:
Although Daenerys’ army technically arrives in King’s Landing during this episode, the real war begins next week. The rest of her fighters will show up then, with Jon at the head, and they’ll plan how to best remove Cersei and Euron from power. And hopefully, this time they won’t make the mistake of underestimating Cersei.
But what can fans expect from the conflict next week?
Tensions between Tyrion and Daenerys will be high.
The promo teaser opens with Tyrion approaching Daenerys, and he does not look confident in doing so. Sansa pointed out that he’s afraid of his queen during this week’s episode, and her words definitely ring true in this clip. And it’s fair that he’d be reluctant to approach her. After all, his sister—who he just publicly insisted isn’t a monster—just killed Daenerys’ closest friend.
Tyrion might be in even greater danger than we thought, and sadly, it’s becoming more likely that Daenerys will kill him than Cersei. Let’s hope he doesn’t mention what he learned about Jon next week. That would really be the final nail in his coffin.
Cersei looks slightly less smug this time around.
The teasers for the eighth season of Game of Thrones all show Cersei glancing down at the city, but she looks slightly less sure of herself during this week’s promo. In fact, her expression reads as though she’s trying to suppress some emotion—and it definitely isn’t happiness. Could Cersei finally be seeing a flaw in her plans to hold the Iron Throne? With only two episodes left in the series, we sure hope so.
The Unsullied will probably fight the Golden Company.
With a big battle approaching, it’s likely that we’ll see all of our characters back on the battlefield. But the Unsullied and the Golden Company are the two most legendary forces in Westeros, and the promo seems to emphasize the fact that they’ll be up against one another.
In the preview, we get a shot of the Golden Company marching, followed by a close-up clip of Grey Worm, who is likely getting ready to lead the Unsullied into battle. And he’s certainly not going to be showing any mercy after the tragic ending of this week’s episode…
Daenerys and Drogon are going to surprise Euron.
The end of the promo shows Euron looking into the sky, waiting for a dragon to appear—though it doesn’t actually show Daenerys flying in on Drogon. In fact, the way Euron looks around makes it seem that Daenerys might actually have a surprise attack up her sleeve. Could she be approaching from a different angle, or is something more going on?
Let’s just hope she doesn’t give the Iron Fleet a chance to shoot Drogon out of the sky. And speaking of that…
Drogon still might be in trouble.
The very last clip of the teaser shows the Iron Fleet pulling back their dragon-killing spear once again, a tactic that already succeeded in taking down Rhaegal. While Daenerys will probably think twice before coming head-on at Cersei’s army with her only remaining dragon, there’s still a chance that Euron’s fleet could defeat Drogon—the teaser certainly seems to be implying it.
Then again, our last promo showed Rhaegal alive, affirming that he survived the Battle of Winterfell—just to shock fans by killing him off later. We know Game of Thrones likes to lead us in one direction, just to go in another. Let’s hope that’s what they’re doing here.
Game of Thrones continues next Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
