Game of Thrones season 8 episode 4 photos show the morning after

Game of Thrones has already drawn the lines of battle for its final three episodes, but the first photos of episode 4 are telling an additional story.

No, we’re not talking about the morning after sleeping together when it comes to the photos of Game of Thrones season 8 episode 4. (Well, we might be in one case, but we’ll get to that in a moment.)

Unsurprisingly, most of the eight photos focus on the aftermath of “The Long Night” as an episode and in-universe as well.

Let’s start with the one above. First off, this appears to be a new coat for Daenerys, although it looks similar to her other ones all the same. Perhaps she can’t wear the white coat anymore after wearing it during the battle and clutching Jorah’s corpse?

This, however, looks like a strategy meeting either still at Winterfell or on the Targaryen fleet that’s apparently coming back from the Iron Islands. While Euron’s been away, Yara’s been busy off-screen.

How do we know that?

Because there’s a big Targaryen fleet again:

If you pay close attention to the map in the image of Missandei, Daenerys, and Varys above, you can see that some of the markers are actually on the water. We know that some ships survived because of how Jon and Dany arrive at Winterfell, but this seems much more significant and important for the battles to come.

But before there’s fighting, there needs to be some remembrance.

Look at who’s carrying torches to burn the dead. We’d recognize Arya’s short stature anywhere, and that’s Sansa next to her; Jon, Grey Worm, Daenerys, and Sam complete the line of people permitted to burn these bodies. All of them lost someone important to them in the battle or have a duty to do this as leaders. For Arya, the “someone important” is the someone who saved her life, Beric Dondarrion.

Here’s a closeup of Jon specifically with his torch, looking appropriately somber in the aftermath of a battle that he may not have thought he’d survive. Notice that for once, there aren’t any photos of Jon and Daenerys together; indeed, she appears in more than he does.

Like so. Here are Daenerys and her most important allies, all standing together to one side of Winterfell…

…And here are the Starks and their allies (and the Hound) on the other side of the castle. You can kind of make this out in the funeral shot, but this is a much more pointed way of saying the same thing.

Here’s the only non-Targaryen or -Stark photo in the bunch, and it’s of what seems like a much more literal morning after between Euron and Cersei. We’ve seen this red dress before; it’s in her character poster. Catch the Mountain lurking in the background. Could Cersei be looking down on the arrival of the Dragon Queen and her cohorts?
