What happens to Guardians of the Galaxy’s Gamora in Avengers: Endgame?
By Mia Johnson
The ultimate sacrifice was made in Avengers: Infinity War in exchange for Gamora’s life. Here’s what happens to Gamora, daughter of Thanos, in Avengers: Endgame.
Warning: This story contains major spoilers for Gamora and other characters in Avengers: Endgame.
Gamora has never lived an easy life being the daughter of Thanos. From the moment he adopted her as a little girl, she knew about his destructive plan to decimate half the universe and later vowed to stop him at any cost. Unfortunately, in Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos stopped her before she was able to stop him. In order to get the Soul Stone on Vormir, he had to sacrifice someone he loved, which ultimately proved to be Gamora.
With the Avengers on a quest to Avenge the fallen, were they able to save Gamora?
The answer to that is no, but there’s a caveat.
First, we have to understand how the Soul Stone works. When Hawkeye and Black Widow go to Vormir for the chance to find the stone back in 2014, Hawkeye learns something about the stone from Red Skull. Anyone whose life was sacrificed for the Soul Stone cannot return back to life under any circumstances. In that moment, it explains why the Avengers cannot bring Black Widow back, but it also explains that the current-day Gamora cannot be brought back either.
Despite those rules, we still saw Gamora appear in Avengers: Endgame, but it was her 2014, pre-Guardian self. She was still (partially) loyal to Thanos and had not met her fellow Guardians yet.
When 2014 Gamora arrives at the destroyed Avengers headquarters for the final battle, she joins current-day Nebula and fights on the side of the Avengers. Unfortunately, when she encounters Star-Lord, she has no idea who he is, and thus has no affection and attachment to him.
It’s a bittersweet moment for Star-Lord, who we see searching for this Gamora at the end of the movie. Needless to say, I think we’ve found the plot for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gamora is somewhere out there in the universe and with her father dead, what is she to do with this freedom?
There’s more unfortunate news to follow, sadly. We’ll have to wait quite some time to find out what happens to this Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The third installment was originally supposed to start filming last fall, according to People. But when director James Gunn was fired from the project last July, it stalled the movie’s production. The script was written, but Disney was in a bind to find out who could replace him.
As we know now, less than a year later, Gunn is back on direct the film. But with the production severely delayed, it means the movie will be pushed back, and we may not find out when it’ll be out until San Diego Comic-Con in July.
The good news is that this may not be the last time we see Gamora. It may be a long wait until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but it will be well worth it to see her alive again.
