Fantastic Beasts: If Johnny Depp was fired and recast would you still support the franchise?

Johnny Depp has come under the spotlight once again and the suggestion of him being fired from the Fantastic Beasts franchise has also resurfaced.

If this was to happen, and a new actor was cast in the role of Gellert Grindelwald, would you still support Fantastic Beasts? Or would that be the end of the Wizarding World franchise for you?

While we contemplate this idea of Johnny Depp being recast, let’s try and keep things civil and on point. Because we have been down this route before. Depp being accused of being an abuser, to it then being claimed he wasn’t the one doing the abusing but the one receiving the abuse, only for it to then come round full circle with Depp being the abuser.

More from Harry Potter

My point is, until we get an actual ruling from a court of law, we’re reserving the right to stay on the fence and not take sides on whether Depp did do it or didn’t do it. If it did emerge he was the one being abusive then, by all means, sack him. He needs to go. But we just don’t know. It’s all very he said she said at the moment.

And I think, for me anyway, if Warner Bros. was to fire Johnny Depp and recast the role of Gellert Grindelwald while everything was still in this awkward phase of maybe he did, maybe he didn’t, it would be the end of the franchise for me.

I think jumping the gun and getting rid of someone prior to a sentencing or a proper trial is wrong. Personally, I believe in innocent until proven guilty. A concept highlighted and championed in Harry Potter.

Don’t believe me on Harry Potter championing innocent until proven guilty? Flashback to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and the articles Rita Skeeter wrote. How quickly was Harry trialed and judge in the media based on Rita’s article?

Another example is in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. When Harry sat before the Wizengamot for casting a Patronus on Dementors set loose on him he was pretty much almost judged and sentenced without a proper trial. Why? Because assumptions had been made by some based on what they had heard rather than looking at the evidence.

I don’t like what is happening right not in relation to Johnny Depp, and it is not because it is Depp. It is because the concept of innocent until proven guilty is being ignored here and that is wrong. If Depp is proved an abuser fine. Fantastic Beasts should sack him and cast someone else in the role of Gellert Grindelwald. But not before. And if they did jump the gun it would be the end of the franchise for me.
