What box office records could Avengers: Endgame break?

As final predictions for Avengers: Endgame’s box office roll in, what box office records could it really break in its opening?

The official Avengers: Endgame premiere brought all kinds of fashion to the purple carpet, but it also firmly yanked attention to how fancy everyone looked — fitting, considering how much money the movie is about to make. The Hollywood Reporter has it that the movie could make $300 million just in the United States in its first weekend.

But the real draw here is that a big domestic and international weekend could lead up to $1 billion “in less than a week.” Every other film that’s crossed $1 billion globally has taken more than a week. Even the current record-holder, Avengers: Infinity War, took 11 days to cross the threshold, and that was only a day ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In other words, this should be something that’s more likely to be done in small increments — not massive jumps like the one that’s being predicted here.

Now, to be fair, THR hedges its bets a little here, by saying that the film “potentially means that Endgame could cross $1 billion in less than a week.” Note that crossing $1 billion is not even in question, and it doesn’t seem like $2 billion is really thought of as a surprise, either, despite being somewhat in doubt for Avengers: Infinity War.

However, Infinity War was only able to crack the top-five unadjusted all-time box office grossers — not even the top three. Endgame being the fastest to make $1 billion seems like it would guarantee inclusion in the top five before all is said and done, but can it reach Avatar and Titanic, which are numbers one and two? Both films have benefited from re-releases, so Avatar has $2.787 billion to its name.

That’s what’s really in question at this point, as we wait for the first weekend’s receipts to roll in. They’ll be able to tell us a little more about Endgame‘s potential. For all that it technically doesn’t conclude Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s right there in the title: this is the end of something big.

Whether or not it’s big enough to shatter basically every record that it has the potential for remains a question.
