Game of Thrones’ Sophie Turner stars in the final trailer for Dark Phoenix
By Mia Johnson
The final trailer for Dark Phoenix puts all the emphasis on Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey, in what will likely be her last run as the X-Men character.
Marvel is reminding us after the Game of Thrones hype that Sophie Turner is also their current Jean Grey in the X-Men universe, not just Sansa Stark of Winterfell. The timing to remind everyone seems right, too, seeing as the final trailer for Dark Phoenix dropped today, just three days after the premiere of Game of Thrones.
Whether intentional or not, Dark Phoenix could use the wave of attention from Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones, seeing as the premiere episode of the show’s eighth season broke records with 17.4 million viewers watching. Now, with Turner starring in the movie, Dark Phoenix can hopefully grab some of that audience that’s still excited for Game of Thrones — especially with the latest trailer.
In this final trailer, the X-Men are exploring the final frontier, space, when something goes wrong with Jean. She begins to struggle with her powers, and she confesses when she loses control, “bad things happen, but it feels good.” We get shots of other X-Men trying to stop her during her rage like Storm and Quick Silver, but it’s no use. Sophie Turner– we mean, Jean Grey– is just too powerful.
Unfortunately for Game of Thrones and Sophie Turner fans, this will likely be the last installment of the X-Men movie series with these actors. Now that the Fox-Disney merger went through, Disney has the ability to add the X-Men into the MCU. And at this point, they’ll likely have to do that through a hard reboot.
Disney’s reboot has to come for a number of reasons, and part of that would be to just end the confusing saga that these X-Men movies have become. Going back and forth through time seriously messed up the movie’s timeline and continuity, and (most importantly) we can’t have Wolverine dead now that the X-Men can finally be with the Avengers.
This isn’t to say this final movie will be a bad one. In fact, as standalone movies, each of the X-Men prequels are all enjoyable movies. But when strung together to create a full story arc, that’s when things get messy.
The X-Men could really use Kevin Feige’s help at this point. He started out working on the first X-Men movie before joining Marvel Studios, so he’s one of the best people to have to reboot this franchise.
Dark Phoenix is out in theaters June 7. Before that, you can catch Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark in the final episodes of Game of Thrones on Sundays on HBO.
Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
