Are you going to be car camping at Coachella? With a few tricks and tips, that weekend of roughing it won’t seem too daunting.

Car camping at Coachella is one of the more popular ways to experience the annual music festival. Coachella has become one of the most influential music festivals around the world. From the headliners on stage to the celebrities watching the performances, trends are made at this annual music festival.

While celebrities can afford lavish hotels, many mere mortals must find more cost-effective lodging options. Even though Coachella offers safari, luxury tents and regular tent camping (no Fyre festival tents here), the most cost-effective way to stay is camp in and by your car.

Simply stated, car camping is camping/staying in and around your car. At Coachella, there is space designated for people to park and set up an area to stay. While this area is described as an “oasis” for guests, it is more “roughing it” than “five-star luxury.”

Still, if you are heading out to Coachella to camp in your car, a few tips can make the experience a little more enjoyable.

Know the rules

Yes, Coachella has rules about what you can and cannot bring in your car. From prohibited items like glass bottles to noise ordinances, be familiar with the rules associated with staying in the car area.

While you can pack a ton of people in that small space, remember you are stuck there for the duration of the festival. Be considerate of your fellow festival goers. It can be a memorable experience when done correctly.

Seek out the shade

Staying in the desert means that the sun and heat will be everywhere. Since the camping “spot” has some extra space beyond the car, consider bringing a pop-up tent or tarp. These areas can offer a little respite from the blaring sun.

Remember, it is often windy, very windy. Don’t leave your tent or tarp up when you’re away from the car. If you do, that little patch of shade might have blown far, far away.

Make it comfortable

Just because you are camping, doesn’t mean that the experience will be horrible. Depending on the size of your vehicle, invest in an inflatable mattress or even a sleeping pad/car mattress (yes, there is such a thing). Otherwise, a good sleeping bag and pillows can help, too.

One expert tip, sleep with your head to the front of the car. Even in smaller cars, this position allows the most room for sleeping. Don’t knock it until you have tried it.

Stay hydrated

While the music festival has all types of amazing food and drinks, hydration is key to enjoying the entire weekend. In the desert climate, keeping up with your water intake is paramount.

Since Coachella has several water bottle refilling stations, remember to bring a few extra water bottles for the trip. Even collapsible water bottles are great to minimize space. Also, remember the one-to-one rule. One water for every alcoholic beverage.

Have this must-have fashion accessory

Every year, there is some new look, trend, or must-have fashion item that comes from the music festival. Although maybe not the trendiest item in your wardrobe, a bandana will be one of the most important items from the weekend.

Since Coachella is in the desert, it is dusty, windy and film-thin layers of dust will be everywhere. If you don’t want to inhale dust for a weekend, bring a bandana.

If you don’t like the old-school Western ones that are sold at every dollar store, make your own out of some cute fabric. You don’t have to be a designer on Project Runway to sew a bandana.

Remember the essentials

From hats and sunglasses to ponchos and sunblock, general vacation essentials are always important at Coachella. While there are showers available, it isn’t going to be the spa. Think about products that will keep you feeling good that are also easy. Body wipes, dry shampoo and lots of sunscreens are always wise choices. Remember you can book a spa day to scrub away all the dust and grime when you return home.

Check to see if you have access to a lounge

Several brands, like AMEX, Marriott Bonvoy and others give members access to special lounges. These little hideaways can be a great break from all the festival activities. From charging stations to comfy chairs, these lounges can be a great break from the camping quarters.
