Game of Thrones wants you to rock out with For the Throne album
Game of Thrones wants to continue its domination by setting its sights on the music charts, enlisting some big names for For the Throne.
Game of Thrones is not ending its marketing push when April 14 and the season 8 premiere roll around. At this point, it probably could, considering the amount of material the show has already put out. Perhaps that’s why today’s announcement has such a different tack.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, April 26 will see the release of For the Throne, which does not apparently include any more covers of “The Rains of Castamere” or “The Bear and the Maiden Fair,” as EW writes it’s all “original songs.” Boo, say we, but perhaps the list of artists involved will bring a smile back to your face:
"A$AP RockyChloe X HalleEllie GouldingJacob BanksJames ArthurJoey BadA$$Lennon StellaLil PeepMaren MorrisMatthew BellamyMumford & SonsRosalía feat. A.CHALSZAThe LumineersThe NationalThe WeekndTravis ScottTy Dolla $ignX Ambassadors"
First off, this is a mix of genres, from straight pop in Ellie Goulding to more indie sounds in The Lumineers to Black Panther soundtrack alums/hip-hop and R&B mainstays The Weeknd, Travis Scott, and SZA. Maren Morris is also here to represent the country side of things, alongside Lennon Stella.
Speaking of The Weeknd and SZA, though, check out the announcement video, and pay close attention to their names in particular:
SZA has a dragon standing in for the S, and The Weeknd’s W has a direwolf. Is this a hint as to the tracks they’ll be putting on the album? Will SZA title hers “Khaleesi” or “Mother of Dragons” and lay down the rap we all know Daenerys Targaryen has within her? What about The Weeknd? His tunes have that sort of broodiness about them that would really suit a Jon Snow track.
In terms of specifics, there are 9 House covers for the vinyls, from Martell and Tyrell to Stark, Targaryen, and Lannister. Each House only has 2,500 copies worldwide. There’s also a “limited edition fire and ice split-covered” version of the vinyl album, which looks pretty sweet — but is limited to just 3,500 copies worldwide. (The vinyl is also apparently “translucent,” which is even better.) Consequently, however, it’s a little more expensive.
Finally, there’s a more basic version if you can’t decide and just want a cool image of the Iron Throne. All three vinyl albums do come with a digital copy of the album as well, since the vinyls will be released this summer. Additionally, it appears that those who buy the vinyls might get slightly earlier access, as the listing for the fire and ice version says a download link will be sent April 23.
