Saturday Night Live review: Game of Thrones gets a slew of spinoffs

Kit Harington brought a few of his Game of Thrones co-stars to join him on Saturday Night Live. Plus, SNL pitched some new spinoffs for the show.

This week’s Saturday Night Live was a long time coming. Luckily, this season, we’ve now had two Game of Thrones stars to host SNL. First, it was Jason Momoa. And now, Jon Snow himself, Kit Harington hosted the sketch show for the first time.

The best hosts are usually actors who aren’t so much into comedy, because we get to see a different side of them. And boy, did we get to see a few different sides from Kit Harington last night. He was a nerd, he was a burlesque dancer, and he was a video game character — to name a few.

Aside from Harington, this show was filled to the brim with celebrity guest stars who you won’t want to miss. Below are highlights from the show including the cold open, Weekend Update, and three must-watch sketches.

Cold Open

This may be one of the most divisive cold opens I’ve come across in a while. As a plus this week, Jason Sudeikis returned to play his long-time character, Joe Biden. During the Obama era, it was especially fun to see Sudeikis take on Biden because of his absolutely chipper nature.

This time, though, SNL takes Biden through sensitivity training, given the recent accusations of inappropriate touching against the former vice president. The accusations have been quite mild, posing Biden as more touchy than your average person, and this is the angle SNL takes. Again, it’s on the milder end of accusations when it comes to public figures, but it still made the sketch a bit uncomfortable to watch, no matter how much I love Jason Sudeikis.

Monologue

After a so-so cold open, it was relieving to see Kit Harington take the stage. And Game of Thrones fans, especially, will love this one because of all the Thrones cameos. They’ve got Emilia Clarke, John Bradley, Rose Leslie and even… The Night King himself. If you aren’t a Game of Thrones fan, the monologue is still kind of funny enough to get by — but maybe only a few jokes will stick.

Weekend Update

If you ever wondered what a movie review would be like from someone on drugs, look no further than this sketch. Alex Moffat’s character Terry Fink reminds me of Bobby Moynihan’s Anthony Crispino because of the sheer amount of wrong information you get from him. Overall, I wouldn’t mind seeing this character again and having him tackle some of the summer blockbusters.

Three must-see sketches

New HBO Shows

Game of Thrones is ending this season, but that doesn’t mean they can’t “go full Star Wars” and maybe give us a couple of spinoffs in the process. In this sketch, HBO introduces new shows like AryaThe Queen of Kings Landing and Game of Thrones: Special Victims Unit — the last one featuring two special guests.

Bachelorette Party

I have very few words for this sketch, but Kit Harington… as a burlesque dancer. And Leslie Jones breaks character in this. Make of that what you will. Just watch, and prepare to blush.

Graphics Department

Kit Harington may star in Game of Thrones, but he hardly comes off as the stereotypical, Comic Book Guy-like fan that some might think watches that kind of show. In this sketch, you get to see what would happen if he was like that, and Harington gets to do some live action roleplaying as well. It’s totally hilarious to see him take on this character alongside Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett.

Next week, April 13, Emma Stone returns to host SNL. And, for the first time, K-Pop mega-group BTS will be the musical guest.
