In the fourth installment of The Avengers, we think that Captain Marvel will fight his final battle against Thanos to save the universe.
Every day, there are new theories about the upcoming release of Avengers: Endgame. Clocking in at over three hours, there will be a lot of action and heartbreak in this fourth installment of the Avengers. Today, we are going to speculate about the fate of none other than Captain America.
What is Steve Roger’s status up until Endgame?
In Infinity War, Cap watches incredulously as his recently reunited friend, Bucky Barnes, vanishes into dust. In the Endgame trailer, we see an emotional (and clean-shaven) Steve Rogers carrying a coffin draped with a U.S. flag, which is likely meant to honor Bucky’s passing. He later goes on to say: “I keep telling everybody they should move on. Some do. But not us.”
Will Captain America survive Endgame?
No, Captain America will make the final sacrifice for all of life to defeat Thanos. In these large fantasy/science fiction series, the main hero of the series has to either be sacrificed or lose something very dear to him or her. Frodo never can live peacefully in the Shire; Harry has to lose Dumbledore, Hedwig, and many others.
It seems fitting Captain America would be the one to sacrifice himself in Endgame, much more than Iron Man. While Tony Stark and his heroic persona and incredible technology have aided the Avengers time and time again, it truly is Cap who’s been the effective leader.
Cap leads through his actions, often making choices that put him at risk because he thinks it is the right thing to do. As for Tony, he sometimes does things that are beneficial or politically expedient for him.
When it comes to Endgame‘s storyline following the snappening in Infinity War, Steve Rogers is with the surviving Avengers on Earth while Tony is stuck in space. Thus, Steve will be the one everyone looks to as they deal with grief and loss after the Great Dusting.
Finally, looking at a majority of Marvel’s promotional material for Endgame, it is our leading man Cap who is getting most of the attention, not Tony. From being in the center of posters to leading our Avengers in their new (potentially time-traveling) suits, there is a lot of focus being put on Cap and it could very well be because this is his MCU swan song.
We’ve seen Cap struggling throughout the series to find his place in the world. He finally gets reunited with his best friend only to lose him again. Perhaps someone like Captain Marvel will say that he’s done his part and that it’s okay to make this sacrifice so everyone else will live.
If we do lose Steve Rogers and Captain America in Avengers: Endgame, I have one hope and that’s that he’ll have one last moment with his BFF Bucky again.
But beyond that, it’s likely that Steve Rogers will be signing off permanently in this movie.
We’ll find out what happens on April 26 when Avengers: Endgame is released!
